Power Steering Gear Replacement

REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Remove the intermediate shaft lower coupling.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the left front tire and wheel assembly.
4. Remove the road sensing suspension position sensor.
5. Remove the road sensing suspension links.





6. Remove both tie rod ends from the steering knuckles (5).
7. Remove the exhaust Y pipe
8. Support the rear of the frame using a screw jack.
9. Loosen the number 2 and number 3 body mount bolts.
Slowly lower the rear of the frame.
10. Remove the heat shield.
11. Remove the plastic line retainer.
12. Disconnect the pressure and return pipes from the gear.
13. Disconnect the Magnasteer(TM) electrical connector.
14. Remove the 5 rack and pinion attaching bolts (1,2).
15. Remove the rack and pinion assembly. Slide the assembly out to one side.
16. Remove the boots and inner tie rod assemblies.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the inner tie rod and boot assemblies.
2. Install the rack and pinion assembly.





NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the 5 rack and pinion attaching bolts (1,2).
- Tighten the bolts to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.).

4. Connect the Magnasteer(TM) electrical connector.
5. Connect the pressure and return pipes to the gear.
- Tighten the pressure and return pipes at the gear to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).

6. Install the plastic line retainer.
7. Install the heat shield.
8. Raise the frame. Tighten the body mount bolts.
9. Install the exhaust Y pipe at the converter.

IMPORTANT: When tightening the tie rod end nut, a minimum torque of 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.) must be obtained. If 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.) is not obtained, inspect the nut for stripped threads. If the threads are satisfactory, replace the tie rod end and knuckle. After tightening the castellated nut to specification, align the slot in the nut to the cotter pin (3) hole by tightening only. DO NOT loosen the nut for the cotter pin (3) installation.

10. Install the tie rod ends.
- Tighten the tie rod end nut to 10 Nm (7.5 ft. lbs.).

11. Tighten the nut an additional 1/3 turn (2 flats).
12. Install the road sensing suspension position sensor.
13. Install the tire and wheel assemblies.
14. Lower the vehicle.
15. Install the intermediate shaft lower coupling.
- Tighten the intermediate shaft coupling bolt to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).

16. Fill the power steering system.
17. Bleed the power steering system.
