Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing & Jacket - Assemble

ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE

- Tool Required
- J 23073-01 Shift Tube Installer





1. Install the gear shift bowl shroud (1).
2. Install the gear shift bowl assembly (2).
3. Lubricate with synthetic grease. Install the shift lever spring (3).
4. Install the 2 thrust washers (4).
5. Install the wave washer (5).
6. Install the lock plate (6).
7. Install the 2 thrust washers (4).
8. Install the shift tube retaining ring (8).





9. Install the shift tube assembly (1) using J23073-01.





10. Install the shift lever gate (1).
11. Install the 2 oval head cross recess screws (6).
12. Install the steering column housing support assembly (4) with the dimmer switch assembly (3) still connected.
13. Install the 4 Torx(R) head screws (2).





14. Apply lithium grease to the exposed shaft engagement areas (1) and then install the steering shaft assembly (2).





15. Install the steering shaft assembly.





16. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
17. Install 2 hex washer head tapping screws (2).
- Tighten the screws to 5.5 Nm (49 inch lbs.).





18. If no sensor is present, install the bearing retainer (1).





19. Install the lower bearing seat (3).
20. Install the lower bearing spring (2).
21. Install the lower spring retainer (1).





22. Perform the following steps if the Hi Res sensor is present.
- Install the sensor adapter (1).
- Install the hi res steering wheel position sensor(2).
- Install the retainer sensor (3).
- Install the steering shaft seal (4).





23. If no sensor is present, install the steering shaft seal.





24. Install the seal retaining bushing (1).
25. Install the lower spring retainer (1).
26. Install the electrical BTSI actuator assembly.
27. Install the ignition switch assembly.
28. Install the steering column housing assembly.
29. Install the shift lever assembly.
