Starter Motor: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.




1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the IAT sensor.
3. Remove the MAF sensor.
4. Remove the intake manifold.
5. Disconnect the wiring from the starter.




6. Remove the starter motor retaining bolts.
7. Remove the starter motor from the engine.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

NOTE: Before installing the starter motor to the engine, tighten the inner nuts on the solenoid terminals to be sure that they are secure in the cap. Tighten the inner nuts on the battery terminal and the starter motor terminal to 8 N.m (70 lb in). If the nuts are not properly tightened, the starter may fail later due to terminal or cap damage.




1. Install the starter motor to the engine.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

2. Install the starter motor retaining bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).




3. Connect the wiring to the starter.
4. Install the intake manifold.
5. Install the MAF sensor.
6. Connect the electrical connector at the IAT sensor.
7. Connect the negative battery cable.

Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).
