Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair
Removal Procedure^ Tools Required
- J 41545 Park/Neutral Switch Aligner
1. Set the parking brake.
2. Set the gear selector to N (Neutral).
3. Remove the electrical connector.
4. Remove the linkage retaining nut.
5. Remove the cable and the lever.
6. Remove the park/neutral position switch.
Installation Procedure

- J 41545 Park/Neutral Switch Aligner
1. Verity that the transmission still is in the N (Neutral) position. If the position has moved, rotate the shaft clockwise from P (Park) through R (Reverse) into N (Neutral). Be careful not to damage the shaft flats, corners, or threads.
^ New replacement park/neutral position switches already are pinned in the N (Neutral) position.
^ When installing a park/neutral position switch with a sheared pin, insert the alignment tool J 41545 into the 2 slots on the switch in the area of the transmission shaft.
^ Rotate the tool until the rear leg on the tool falls into the slot on the switch near the hose.
^ Verify that the tool is seated properly in all 3 slots.
^ Remove the tool.
^ Check for a cracked carrier it either of the following conditions exist:
- The pin is sheared
- You are installing the original switch
Important: After the park/neutral switch installation, verify that the engine starts only in P (Park) or N (Neutral). If the engine starts in any other position, readjust the park/neutral position switch.
Important: Check the shifter for normal freedom of movement.
2. Install the park/neutral position switch.
^ Align the flats in the park/neutral position switch with the transmission manual shaft flats.
^ Press the park/neutral position switch onto the shaft. Fully seat the switch against the transmission.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
3. Install the bolts.
4. With the alignment tool, verify the alignment of the switch before tightening the bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
5. Remove the alignment tool.
6. Install the cable and the lever.
7. Install the linkage retaining nut.
^ Tighten the nut to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
8. Connect the electrical connectors.
