31. Third Clutch Disassemble
^ Tools Required- J 23075 Third Clutch/Servo Piston Spring Compressor
- J 23075-12 Adapter
- J 8059 Snap Ring Pliers
1. Remove the third clutch plates (642, 643).
2. Remove the third clutch cushion plate (641).
3. Inspect the composite plates for damaged tangs or excessive wear.
4. Inspect the steel clutch plates for damaged lugs or heat damage.
5. Compress the third clutch piston springs (611) using J 23075 and J 23075-12. Do not over compress. Excessive stress on the spring seat (639) will cause damage to the spring seat.
6. Remove the third clutch piston spring retainer ring (640) using J 8059.
7. Remove the tools.
8. Remove the third clutch piston spring seat (639).
9. Remove the return springs (611).
10. Remove the third clutch piston (638).
11. Inspect the third clutch piston checkball by shaking the third clutch piston and listening for the checkball to raffle. Replace the piston if the checkball is missing or falls out.
12. Inspect the third clutch drum for damage or worn clutch splines.
13. Remove the third clutch piston outer seal (637).
14. Remove the third clutch piston inner seal (635).
15. Inspect the third clutch piston seals for:

^ cuts
^ damage
