Fuel Pump: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

TOOLS REQUIRED
J 42219-B Fuel Tank Sender Wrench

CAUTION: Refer to Gasoline/Gasoline Vapors Caution in Service Precautions.




1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure.
2. Drain the fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Draining Procedure.
3. Remove the fuel tank.
4. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the fuel tank pressure sensor and the fuel tank connection cover.
5. Remove the fuel pressure and return lines from the tank connection cover and discard the clamps.
6. Remove the air reference hose from the fuel tank pressure sensor.
7. Remove the fastener securing the fuel tank pressure sensor to the fuel tank connection cover and remove the fuel tank pressure sensor.

IMPORTANT: Do Not remove the steel band around fuel sender lock nut. This steel band does not require removal in order the loosen the fuel sender lock nut.

8. Remove the spring loaded clamp around the fuel tank boot. Note the position of the clamp. The clamp must be reinstalled in the same position.
9. Carefully pull the boot from the outer fuel tank housing.
10. Remove the fuel sender locking nut from the fuel tank by using the J 42219-B fuel tank sender wrench.
11. Lift the fuel tank connection cover from the tank and position aside.




12. Remove the fuel pump electrical connectors (2).
13. Remove the hose clamp (3) from the hose at the fuel pump and discard.
14. Remove the hose from the fuel pump.




15. Remove the fuel pump assembly from the fuel tank by pushing the tabs (3) inward to release the assembly and then lifting.




16. Note the position of the fuel inlet screen and remove the screen from the fuel pump and discard.
17. Remove the locking ring by pushing the tabs (1) inward and simultaneously pushing the locking ring out of the fuel pump housing.
18. Remove the fuel pump from the pump housing.

IMPORTANT: Note the position of the fuel sender seal prior to removal. An incorrectly installed seal can cause fuel leaks or [1][2]EVAP DTCs to set.

19. Remove the fuel sender seal (lip) from the fuel tank opening. Carefully slide the seal over the wiring and hoses, then pull the seal over the fuel tank connection cover.
20. Discard the seal.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE




1. Install the fuel pump into the housing making sure the fuel pump suction pipe is seated in the recess in the bottom of the housing.
2. Install the locking ring in the fuel pump housing and snap the locking tabs (1) into the housing (2).
3. Install a new fuel inlet screen onto the fuel pump in the same position as noted during removal.
4. Install the fuel pump assembly into the tank and lock down the tabs.




5. Connect the fuel line to the fuel pump using a new clamp (3).
6. Connect the fuel pump electrical connectors (2).

IMPORTANT: Always replace the fuel sender assembly lip seal when servicing the fuel sender assembly.

7. Install a new lip seal on the tank as follows:
7.1. Carefully pull the seal over the fuel tank connection cover.
7.2. Slide the seal over the wires and hoses to the fuel tank opening.
7.3. Fit the groove in the side of the seal into the lip in the fuel tank opening.
8. Install the fuel tank connection cover on the fuel tank opening.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.




9. Using the J 42219-B fuel tank sender wrench, install the locking nut.

Tighten
Tighten the locking nut to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

Be sure that the lip seal provides a snug seal between the fuel sending unit and the fuel tank.

10. Attach the fuel tank boot to the outer fuel tank housing.
11. Install the spring-loaded clamp around the boot in the same position as it was removed.
12. Install the fuel tank pressure sensor and tighten the fastener to 8 N.m (71 lb in).
13. Connect the air reference hose to the fuel tank pressure sensor.
14. Connect the fuel pressure and return lines to the fuel tank connection cover using new clamps.
15. Connect the fuel tank pressure sensor and fuel tank connection cover electrical connectors.
16. Install the fuel tank.
