Oil Pump: Service and Repair
Removal Procedure^ Tools Required
- J 35268-A Camshaft/Front Main Seal Installer
- J 36660-A Torque/Angle Meter
- J 42098 Crank Hub Torx Socket
- J 42065 Crank Hub Holding Tool
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Recover the A/C system.
3. Drain the coolant.
4. Remove the intake air resonator.
5. Remove the intake plenum.
6. Remove the front timing belt cover.
7. Remove the timing belt.
8. Remove the rear timing belt cover.
9. Remove the A/C compressor.
10. Remove the A/C compressor and power steering pump bracket bolts from the engine block.
11. Position the A/C-PS bracket out of the way of the oil pump housing and secure with mechanic's wire.
12. Remove the generator lower mounting bolt (3).
13. Loosen the upper generator mounting bolt (6).
14. Pivot the generator out of the way and secure with mechanic's wire.
15. Remove the lower oil pan.
16. Remove the upper oil pan.
17. Mount the J 42065 to the crankshaft drive gear.
18. Use the J 42098 to remove the crankshaft drive gear bolt.
19. Remove the crankshaft drive gear.
20. Remove the oil pump bolts.
21. Discard the old oil pump bolts.
22. Remove the oil pump.
23. Remove the front main oil seal and collar from the oil pump.
24. Clean the oil pump sealing surfaces if the pump is to be reinstalled.
25. Clean the engine block (1) and the upper oil pan sealing surfaces.
26. Ensure all of the old sealant, gasket material and residual oil is removed.
27. Ensure the guide pins (2) are in place.
Installation Procedure
Important: Do not cover and/or restrict the gasket openings and oil passages with sealant. Only apply sealant to the crosshatched area of the gasket as shown in the illustration.
1. Coat the pump side of the new oil pump gasket with a thin, even coating of GM P/N 1052942 or equivalent.
2. Install the oil pump gasket.
3. Install the oil pump and align with the guide pins (2).
4. Coat the new oil pump bolts with GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
5. Install the oil pump bolts.
^ Tighten the oil pump bolts to 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the collar.
7. Coat the lip of the front main oil seal with a small amount of GM P/N 12377985 chassis grease, or equivalent, to aid in installation.
8. Install the front main oil seal.
9. Use the J 35268-A to tap the front main oil seal into place.
Ensure the front main oil seal if fully and evenly seated.
10. Install the crankshaft drive gear.
11. Install a new crankshaft drive gear bolt.
^ Tighten the crankshaft drive gear bolt, while counterholding with J 42065, to 250 Nm (1184 ft. lbs.) on the first pass, 45 degrees on the second pass and 15 degrees on the third pass.
12. Install the upper oil pan.
13. Install the lower oil pan.
14. Release and pivot the generator into place and install the generator lower mounting bolt (3).
^ Tighten the generator lower mounting bolt to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
Important: The oil pump bolts must be re-tightened AFTER the generator mounting bolt has been tightened to specifications to allow for uniform compression of the oil pump gasket.
15. Re-tighten the oil pump bolts.
^ Tighten the oil pump bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
16. Re-position the A/C compressor and power steering pump bracket.
17. Install the A/C compressor and power steering pump bracket bolts.
^ Tighten the A/C compressor and power steering pump bracket bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
18. Install the A/C compressor.
19. Install the rear timing belt cover.
20. Install the timing belt.
21. Install the front timing belt cover.
22. Install the intake plenum.
23. Install the intake air resonator.
24. Charge the A/C system.
25. Connect the negative battery cable.
26. Reprogram the applicable accessories. Refer to Reprogramming Accessories After Battery Disconnect in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Warning Indicators.
27. Fill the cooling system.
