Noise and Vibration Analysis

A noise or vibration noticeable when the vehicle is in motion may not be caused by the transmission. If a noise or a vibration is noted in PARK or NEUTRAL with the engine at idle and becomes less noticeable at higher RPM. The cause may be poor engine performance or engine misfire.

Inspect the following systems for other possible causes of the vehicle noise or vibration:

DIAGNOSIS
1. Inspect the tire and wheel components for the following conditions:
^ Uneven wear
^ Imbalance
^ Mixed sizes
^ Stones or debris lodged in the tire threads
2. Inspect the suspension components for the following conditions:
^ Alignment
^ Wear
^ Loose fasteners.
3. Inspect the engine and the transmission mounts for the following conditions:
^ Damage
^ Loose bolts
4. Inspect the transmission case mounting holes for the following conditions:
^ Missing bolts
^ Stripped threads
^ Cracks
5. Inspect the flex plate for the following conditions:
^ Missing or loose bolts
^ Cracks
^ Missing balance weights
6. Inspect the torque converter for the following conditions:
^ Missing or loose bolts
^ Missing or loose lugs
^ Missing or loose balance weights
