Brake System Inspection
BRAKE SYSTEM INSPECTIONInspect the complete system. Inspect the brake lines and the hoses for the following:
^ Proper hookup.
^ Binding.
^ Leaks.
^ Cracks.
^ Chafing, nicks, cuts, etc.
Inspect the disc brake linings for wear and replace if one of the following conditions is present:
1. The brake indicator lamp can indicate worn linings.
2. Replace the linings if either the inner or the outer linings are worn to within 0.76 mm (0.030 inch) of the lining plate or the rivets.
3. Replace the linings if worn unevenly.
4. Replace the linings if the wear surface is worn beveled.
Inspect the rotors for the following conditions:
^ Inspect the surface for excessive rust. If excessive rust is evident, refinish or replace the rotor.
^ Inspect the surface for variation in color. Variation in color indicates a warped rotor. If variation in color is evident, refinish or replace the rotor.
Inspect all other brake parts, including the calipers, the parking brake, wear indicator sensors, wire leads, etc.
NOTES:
^ A low brake fluid level can indicate worn disc brake pads which may need to be serviced. Also, if the brake system warning light stays on or comes on, something may be wrong with the brake system. If the anti-lock brake system warning light stays on or comes on, something may be wrong with the anti-lock brake system.
^ The brakes may need to be inspected more often if driving habits or conditions result in frequent braking.
