Timing Belt Cover Replacement (Rear)


REMOVAL PROCEDURE

- TOOLS REQUIRED
- J 42069-1 Camshaft Locking Tool
- J 42069-2 Camshaft Locking Tool

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

2. Drain the coolant.
3. Remove the intake air resonator.
4. Remove the front timing belt cover.
5. Remove the timing belt.
6. As a precaution, rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise to the 60 degrees BTDC position to prevent valve/piston contact.
7. Remove the camshaft gears.
8. Remove the timing belt tensioner bracket bolts.
9. Remove the timing belt tensioner bracket.
10. Remove the timing belt idler pulley bolt for camshafts 3 and 4.





11. Remove the timing belt idler pulley for camshafts 3 and 4 (2).
12. Remove the water pump bolts.

Important: Use a catch basin to collect escaping coolant.

13. Remove the water pump (1).





14. Remove the rear timing belt cover bolts.
15. Remove the rear timing belt threaded pin.
16. Remove the rear timing belt cover.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE





1. Install the rear timing belt cover.
2. Coat the threaded pin with thread locking compound, GM P/N 12345382 or equivalent.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the rear timing belt cover bolts.
- Tighten the rear timing belt cover bolts to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs).

4. Install the rear timing belt threaded pin.
- Tighten the rear timing belt threaded pin to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs).

5. Clean the water pump sealing surfaces.
6. Clean the cylinder block sealing surfaces.
7. Coat the seal ring of the water pump with silicone grease, GM P/N 12345579 or equivalent.





8. Install the water pump (1).
9. Install the water pump bolts.
- Tighten the water pump bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft lbs).

10. Install the timing belt idler pulley for camshafts 3 and 4 (2).
11. Coat the timing belt idler pulley bolt with thread sealant, GM P/N 12346004 or equivalent and install the bolt. After the final timing belt adjustment are made the bolt will be tightened to specifications.
- Tighten the timing belt idler pulley bolt until snug.

12. Install the timing belt tensioner bracket.
13. Install the timing belt tensioner bracket bolts.
- Tighten the timing belt tensioner bracket bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft lbs).

14. Install the camshaft gears.
15. Install the timing belt.
16. Adjust the timing belt.
17. Install the front timing belt cover.
18. Install the intake air resonator.
19. Refill the cooling system and bleed the cooling system.
20. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
21. Reprogram the applicable accessories.
