Removal Procedure

^ Tools Required:
- J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable assembly from the battery negative terminal.

CAUTION: Before removing or installing any electrical unit or when a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with live exposed electrical terminals, disconnect the negative battery cable assembly to help prevent personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or components. Unless instructed otherwise, the ignition switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position.

2. Remove the headlamp housing upper filler panel and the diagonal brace.
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
4. Remove the shift control cable and the bracket at the transmission.
5. Remove the torque struts.
6. Remove the oil cooler lines at the cooler and the oil sending fine at the transmission.
7. Remove the upper bell housing bolts (2).
8. Remove the power steering return hose at the auxiliary cooler.
9. Install plugs in the cooler and the return hose to prevent fluid leakage or contamination.

Important: Load the support fixture by tightening the wing nuts several turns in order to take the weight of the powertrain off of the mounts and the frame.

10. Install the J 28467-360.
11. Raise the left side of the powertrain (the transmission side) 25.4 mm (1.0 in) above the powertrain resting position with the adjusting screws.
12. Raise the vehicle.
13. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
14. Remove both front tires and wheels.
15. Remove both front wheel opening splash shields.
16. Remove both front suspension position sensors from the lower control arms and position out of the way.
17. Remove both stabilizer links from the struts.
18. Remove both tie rod cotter pins and nuts and separate both tie rods from the steering knuckles.
19. Remove both lower ball joint cotter pins and nuts. Separate both ball joints from the struts.
20. Remove both drive axle nuts and separate both drive axles from the hubs.
21. Remove both drive axles from the transmission.
22. Remove the fuel filter bracket from the frame.
23. Remove the A/C splash shield from the frame.
24. Remove the ABS modulator from the bracket and the support.
25. Remove the engine oil pan to transmission bracket.
26. Remove the torque converter cover.

Important: Mark the flywheel to converter position so that they can be assembled in the same position.

27. Remove the flywheel to converter bolts.
28. Remove the powertrain mount nuts from the frame.
29. Remove the clamp bolt (Rotate the steering intermediate shaft so that the steering gear stub shaft clamp bolt is accessible from the left wheel opening).

CATUION: Failure to disconnect the Intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear or to flue intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control, which could result in an accident and possible personal injury.

NOTICE: Do not rotate the steering wheel or move the position of the steering gear once the intermediate shaft is disconnected. This will uncenter the Inflatable Restraint coil in the steering column. If the Inflatable Restraint coil becomes uncentered, it may be damaged during vehicle operation.

30. Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
31. Remove the electrical harness and connector from the front of the frame.
32. Support the rear of frame with an adjustable jack stand.
33. Remove the four rear frame bolts.
34. Lower the jack stand a few inches to gain access to the power steering gear heat shield and the return fins fining.
35. Remove the power steering gear heat shield and the power steering return line at the gear. Install plugs in the steering gear and pressure line in order to prevent fluid leakage or contamination.
36. Remove the power steering electrical connector.
37. Raise the jack stand and reinstall one rear frame bolt on each side finger tight in order to support the frame.
38. Remove the jack stand.
39. Remove the support frame.
40. Remove the six frame mount bolts.
41. Remove the lower frame and/or raise the vehicle with the steering gear attached.
42. Remove the following electrical connectors:

46. Remove the engine to transmission heat shield and the bracket.

47. Remove the engine to transmission bolts.
48. Lower the transmission.
49. Remove the manual shaft linkage and the park/neutral position switch.
50. Remove the vehicle speed sensor.
51. Remove the oil return pipe.
