Seats - Front Seat Back is Uncomfortable

File In Section: 10 - Body

Bulletin No.: 73-16-10

Date: August, 1997

Subject:
Front Seat Back is Uncomfortable, Sits too High, or Bottom Cushion is too Short (Replace Pillow Cushion Insert)

Models:
1997 Cadillac Concours, DeVille, d'Elegance

Condition

Some owners may comment that the front seat back is uncomfortable or sits too high. They may also comment that the bottom cushion is too short.

Cause

Condition may be caused by high density (firmness) in the pillow cushion insert of the seat back cover.

Correction

Replace the pillow cushion insert in the seat back cover using the procedure below.

1. Remove the leather seat back cover from the seat for access to the pillow insert (Figures 1 and 2). Refer to Section 10-10 of the Service Manual for cover removal procedures.

A. Some separation of the foam is to be expected during the cover removal procedure.

B. Use a knife or a pair of scissors to remove excess glue and foam attached to the trim cover, without cutting the trim material. This is necessary to ensure an even fit when reassembling the seat.

2. Use a knife to cut the stitches securing the section containing the pillow insert to the seat back cover (Figure 3).

3. Disconnect the heated seat element harness from the heated seat thermistor if equipped with KA1 (heated seats).

4. Remove the old pillow insert by unstitching it from the leather section just removed from the seat back cover. The new pillow insert will come complete with heated seat element (if equipped with KA1), new foam pad, and backing material glued to the new pillow cushion insert.

5. Sew the new pillow insert foam to the leather section that was removed. First, stitch the trenches to the leather. Next, stitch the edges of the pillow insert to the leather section. This new section is then re-sewn to the leather seatback cover.

Important:
Avoid stitching through any part of the heater element.

6. Reconnect the heated seat thermistor, if so equipped.

7. Finish assembling the seat. Make sure all electrical connections are intact.

8. Install the seat in the vehicle. Check the operation of the heated seats, if equipped.
