Compact Disc Player (CD): Service and Repair

Storage and handling of compact discs should be given the same care as conventional records. Further cleaning will not be necessary if the disc is always held by the edges and is returned to the case immediately after playing.

Clean
^ If the compact disc should become soiled by fingerprints, dirt or dust, it can be wiped (always in a straight line, from center to edge) with a clean lint-free, soft, dry cloth. No solvent or abrasive cleaner should ever be used on the disc. Conventional record cleaner should NOT be used. Inexpensive, dedicated disc cleaning kits are available and are recommended.

Inspect
^ Although the discs are quite durable, certain conditions will affect playback performance, possibly resulting in noise, skipping, or muting. The disc and player should be inspected for the following items when diagnosing problems.
^ Scratches on either top or bottom surface of the disc; particularly the bottom (opposite the label).
^ Dirt, dust or fingerprints on either surface.
^ Wrapped disc: may result from playing a cold disc in a warm unit or vice versa.
^ Moisture (or condensation) on the disc or in the player may result in the displaying of ERR and either muting or ejection of the disc.
^ Excessive interior or operating temperatures may result in increased skipping.

Important: Mini Discs called singles (about 3 inches in diameter) will not eject and should not be used. Even if used with an adapter, they may lodge in the player.
