DTC C1286 Schematic:

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The steering wheel center position is re-learned by the EBTCM in every drive cycle. Once it has been established, the center position for the steering wheel should remain fairly constant.

CONDITION FOR SETTING THE DTC
DTC C1286 can be set any time after the steering angle has been centered by the EBTCM. If the center steer angle bias value begins to drift (20 degrees or more) from the initial center position, this code will be set.

ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS
A malfunction DTC is stored, ABS and TCS remain enabled, Stabilitrak is disabled and the STABILITY REDUCED message will be displayed on the DIC.

CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE DTC
Condition for DTC is no longer present and scan tool clear DTC function is used. Fifty start cycles have passed with no DTCs detected.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
It is very important to check the vehicle for proper alignment. The car should not pull in either direction while driving straight on a flat surface. When performing the following diagnostic procedure, ensure that the vehicle is parked on a level surface. It is important to find out from the driver when the code was set, (when the STABILITY REDUCED message was activated) and what was he doing at the time. This information will help to duplicate the failure. It is very important that a thorough inspection of the wiring and connectors be performed. Failure to carefully and fully inspect wiring and connectors may result in misdiagnosis, causing part replacement with reappearance of the malfunction. An intermittent malfunction is most likely caused by a poor connection, rubbed through wire insulation, or a wire that is broken inside the Insulator.
