B1163
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
When the ignition switch is first turned to RUN, the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) flashes the AIR BAG warning lamp 7 times. The inflatable restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) then commands the IPC to turn the AIR BAG warning lamp OFF if no SIR DTCs are present by sending a message over the Serial Data Line Class 2. The IPC then returns a message to the SDM that the AIR BAG warning lamp is OFF. The State Of Health DTC U1096 indicates that the SDM has lost communication with the IPC. DTC B1159 and DTC B1160 will set (without DTC B1155) if the IPC cannot communicate with the SDM at IPC Power-ON.
CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC
If the SDM does not receive a response from the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) after sending the AIR BAG warning lamp message 6 times, the SDM will set DTC B1163. A loss of State Of Health DTC U1096 is also set. This test is run ASYNCHRONOUSLY during CONTINUOUS MONITORING.
ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS
The SDM sets a diagnostic trouble code.
CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE DTC
^ Current DTC One of the following must occur to clear the DTC:
- The ignition switch is turned OFF.
- The SDM receives the IPC message response over Serial Data Line Class 2.
^ History DTC.
- You issue a scan tool CLEAR CODES command.
- 250 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.
DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
The following failures could cause a history DTC B1163 to set:
^ The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) lost B+ or ground with the ignition switch to RUN.
^ An intermittent short to B+ in the CKT 1807 Serial Data Line Class 2.
^ An intermittent short to ground in the CKT 1807 Serial Data Line Class 2.
^ An intermittent open in the CKT 1807 Serial Data Line Class 2.
DTCs B1159, B1160, B1163, and U1096 will all he set history if a Serial Data Line Class 2 failure occurred and is now repaired.
The State Of Health (SOH) DTC U1096 and the SIR DTCs B1159 and B1160 will likely he set with DTC B1163 indicating that communication is lost between the IPC and the SDM. Check that the IPC is functioning properly.
