P096
Powertrain Control Module (PCM):
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
This diagnostic test checks for unusually large throttle position at low vehicle speed with the brake being applied. The primary purpose of this code is to record snapshot data and alert the driver that this driving condition could damage the vehicle drivetrain or create an unsafe condition. If such a driving condition exists, Code P096 will set.
NOTE: Most occurrences of this code will be due to the application of the brake and accelerator at the same time.
TEST CONDITIONS
Codes P021, P022 and P024 not set.
FAILURE CONDITIONS
1. Brake applied.
2. Transaxle in DRIVE or REVERSE.
3. Vehicle speed 5 mph or less.
4. Throttle position 65 degrees or greater for 12 seconds.
ACTION TAKEN
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) turns "ON" the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (Service Engine Soon).
DIAGNOSTIC CIRCUIT CHECK
Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) brake switch, Transaxle Range switch, Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) and Throttle Position (TP) sensor failures should be caught by other diagnostic codes. If any of the checks below fail, see the indicated code chart for diagnosis.
^ Check operation of brake switch by using TCC brake switch input test (see code PO9O).
^ Check operation of TP sensor by monitoring TP sensor degrees while moving throttle (see codes P021, P022, and PO7O).
^ Check for correct mph indication on instrument panel (see code P024).
^ Check operation of transaxle range switch by monitoring "AUTO" status light while shifting in and out of Park/Neutral. (see code PO91).
