P016

Diagnostic Trouble Code Chart P016:

Generator Voltage Circuit:

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors ignition voltage on CKT 539 to the PCM. Code P016 will set if ignition voltage drops below 10 volts, with the engine running above 500 rpm or goes above 16 volts. If the ignition voltage goes to 0 volts (open circuit) the vehicle will not run since the PCM does not have the ignition signal.

TEST CONDITIONS
Test continuously.

FAILURE CONDITIONS
Case 1
1. Engine rpm 500 or greater.
2. Ignition voltage less than 10 volts for 5 seconds.

Case 2
1. Ignition voltage greater than 16 volts for 5 seconds.

ACTION TAKEN
1. PCM turns "ON" the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (Service Engine Soon).
2. PCM disables evaporative emission control solenoid
3. PCM disables cruise control.
4. PCM disables Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid.
5. PCM disables transaxle pressure control solenoid.
6. PCM allows only second gear operation when any forward gear is selected.
7. Transaxle shift adapts are maintained at current levels.
8. Garage shift adapts are maintained at current levels.

NOTES ON FAULT TREE
1. If data parameters PD15 and ID50 are within 0.5 volt of each other, there may be a system voltage problem. If they are not within 0.5 volt of each other, find out why the PCM voltage is different.
2. Checking if PCM data PD15 is actually displaying system voltage.

NOTES ON INTERMITTENTS
A loose or faulty connection at the generator "L" terminal may cause Code P016 to set intermittently.
