Front Door Window Glass: Adjustments
51 32 154 Adjusting Left Or Right Front Side Window
Special tools required:
- 51 3 080
- 51 0 360
- 51 3 310
- 51 3 010
- 51 0 341
- 51 0 342
- 51 3 300
- 51 3 301
- 51 3 303
- 51 3 304
Prerequisite:
- Vehicle must be standing on its wheels on a level floor
- Front door correctly adjusted to fit
- If necessary, close retractable hardtop
IMPORTANT: When closing, the door window glass must not jam on the trim strip in any area of the window (window glass breakage).
If necessary, incoming check:
The following incoming checks must be carried out prior to every adjusting procedure:
NOTE: Incoming check must be carried out with the weather strip fitted.
- Denormalize power windows
- Measure retraction depths with special tool 51 3 080
- Initialise power window regulators
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Denormalize power windows
- Remove front door trim panel
- Remove sound insulation
- Remove outer weather strip (not for checking pretension)
Ideal adjustment, longitudinal direction:
Open door window.
Fit special tool 51 0 360 in front door and press back until limit position.
NOTE: Special tool 51 0 360 must rest against door and reach limit position on guide (1).
Ideal adjustment, retraction depth:
- Open side window
- Attach special tool 51 3 080 to door window glass
- Close front door and door window
- Measure retraction depth
NOTE: 2 items of special tool 51 3 080 are required for adjustment of retraction depths.
Mask special tool 51 3 310 in area A with fabric adhesive tape.
Hold suitable foil between window glass and tool. (Risk of damage to paint and window glass)
Adjusting longitudinal direction/retraction depth:
Slacken screws (1) with special tool 51 3 310 until door window glass can just be moved.
Tightening torque 51 32 2AZ.
NOTE: Make sure that the window glass is not bonded to support (1) in blue area (A). (Increased break-away torque)
Attach special tool 51 3 010 to door window glass (1).
Adjust retraction depth and longitudinal direction of door window glass (1) by moving door window glass with special tool 51 3 010.
Adjusting retraction depth:
Measure retraction depth "C" in areas A and B.
Retraction depth C:
C = 4.3 ± 1 mm in area A
(measuring point distance 30 mm to mirror triangle)
C = 8.5 ± 1 mm in area B
(measuring point distance next to dot screen)
IMPORTANT: Front door must open and close without the door window glass touching the roof trim strip.
Adjusting longitudinal direction:
Close door and door window glass.
Door window glass (1) must touch gasket (2) in area of B-pillar in accordance with dimension "A".
Dimension A:
A = 12 ± 1 mm
Installation note:
The tightening torque to be set 51 32 1AZ (MDE) is reduced when special tool 51 3 310 is used. Depending on the torque wrench used, this must be calculated in accordance with the adjacent overview:
MDE = Torque to be set
MDV = Prescribed torque (without special tool)
lj = Standard adjustment length with adjusting tool
l1 = Effective length of torque wrench
l2 = Inside dimension of adjusting tool
lw = Inside dimension of insertion tool (here lw = 145 mm)
Tighten down screws (1) with special tool 51 3 310.
Tightening torque 51 32 2AZ.
Remove special tool 51 3 010 from door window glass.
Upper edge of door window glass (1) must be adjusted parallel to contour (2) of gutter strip.
Gaskets on A-pillar and on retractable hardtop must not be damaged.
When the door window glass is retracted into the gaskets, the gaskets must not distorted.
Ideal setting, preload:
NOTE: Pre-tension can be checked with or without weather strip. Pre-tension is 1.0 mm less with weather strip. Magnet in special tool 51 0 341 creates the correct door window glass pre-tension on the seal system for measurement. No force must be exerted on the door or door window glass during measurement.
Insert special tool 51 0 341 in rotary striker of door lock and close rotary striker manually. Carefully close door.
Place special tool 51 0 342 with distance "B" to door window glass side edge at gasket (1) and measure dimension (A) to inner edge of door window glass (2).
Dimension "A" with weather strip:
A = 30 ± 1 mm
Dimension "A" without weather strip:
A = 29 ± 1 mm
B = 40 mm
Adjusting pretension:
Slacken nut (3) with reversible ratchet (2) of special tool 51 3 300 (consisting of 51 3 301, 51 3 303 and 51 3 304).
Turn knob (1) on special tool 51 3 300 to turn bolt (4) and thereby alter the pretension.
Tighten nut (3).
Tightening torque 51 32 6AZ.
Check adjustment, repeat procedure if necessary.
NOTE:
- After completing adjusting procedure, it is essential to initialize the power window regulator.
- Checking run-in of door window glass:
- Door window glass must strike the inside of the gasket.
