December 2012
Technical Service
SUBJECT
Rear Park Distance Control Does Not Work
MODEL
E84
Produced to September 10, 2012
With option 508 - PDC (Park Distance Control)
SITUATION
When the reverse gear is selected or the PDC button is pressed, the rear PDC sensors do not work and, at times, there is no check control messages displayed.
CAUSE
Water ingresses into the PDC sensor. This is because the wire connection for the drivers side rear outer PDC sensor is not protected from water, dirt and other foreign materials kicked up by the drivers side rear wheel.
PROCEDURE
1. Perform a vehicle test using ISTA.
Note:
When the ISTA system message displays: Battery voltage only "XX.XX" V. Please connect charger. Please note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section. This documentation is not necessary when part of an approved Technical Service repair procedure; the battery charger is required to be attached before performing the Vehicle Test.
2. If no faults are stored, proceed to step 4.
3. If faults are stored for the PDC system, complete all related test plans and follow the test plan recommendations. This Service Information is no longer applicable.
4. Locate the drivers side rear outer PDC sensor.
5. Uninstall the PDC sensor from the mounting bracket in the bumper as per Repair Instruction 66 20 534, "Removing/replacing left rear outer PDC sensor."
6. Disconnect the sensor from the wiring harness.
7. Check the connectors on both the wiring harness and the PDC sensor for dirt and corrosion. Clean both connectors.
Note:
If pins are corroded and cannot be cleaned, replace as needed.
8. Reconnect the PDC sensor and retest the rear PDC functionality.
9. Uninstall the drivers side rear outer PDC sensor from the bumper mounting bracket.
Note:
Do not disconnect the sensor from the wiring harness.
10. Install the "Protective Cap" as shown.
Note:
Be careful when installing the protective cap - do not pinch any of the wires.
11. The PDC sensor should look as displayed in this picture after reinstallation in the mounting bracket.
12. Once again, verify the rear PDC sensors are functional.
