51 31 011 Replace Windscreen
Special tools required:
- 51 0 010
IMPORTANT:
The following notes form the basis for these repair instructions and must be adhered to at all times:
- Notes on window bonding
- General procedure for dismantling/installation of affixed window glass
Removal is performed with Roll Out 2000.
The following new parts / consumables are required (sourcing reference BMW Parts Department).
Necessary preliminary work:
- Remove inside mirror
- Remove panels for roof pillar at front
- Remove cover for cowl panel
Depending on version:
- Remove camera for lane departure warning
- Remove the rain/light/solar and condensation sensor and immediately install on a new windscreen.
Window removal:
Rubber frame (1) is secured at the side to the A-pillar (2) with double-sided adhesive tape.
F06/F13 M6 only: rubber frame (1) is additionally secured in roof area with double-sided adhesive tape.
Release double-sided adhesive tape from body rubber frame (1).
Before installing the windscreen, remove adhesive residue from the body and clean adhesive area.
Tape off body in area of piercing point with fabric adhesive tape.
Push wire from Roll Out 2000 along line (1) through adhesive bead (2).

Lift out windscreen with suction cup.
Window installation:
Completely remove any excess of removed spacer buffers and exactly keep the installation position to prevent windscreen breakage and wind noise.
Installation position of spacer buffers (2) is marked on the body side (1).
Position the spacer buffers (2) in the centre of the embossed marks (1).
Buffer sizes to be used: 5x5x20 mm.
Attach new cover (1) to windscreen (2).
NOTE: Notch (3) of the cover (1) is in the centre of the windscreen (2).
Clean adhesive area of cover (1) on body.
Installation note:
If necessary, replace defective expanding foam tape (1).
Observe notes on component-bonding with adhesive tape.
Overview of windscreen bonding:
Perform the following steps carefully on the windscreen using siphon (51 3 010):
- Insert between engine compartment lid and cowl panel
- Position windscreen at top
- Align sides evenly
- Insert at bottom and press down
- Press windscreen upwards until seal is uniformly contacting roof
- Affix the windscreen in this position using plastic adhesive tapes*

Preload on top of windscreen to prevent wind noise:
Windscreen (1) must be lower than roof outer skin (2). This is the only way to prevent wind noises.
Position special tool 51 0 010 in centre of vehicle depending on dimension (A) and check underprotrusion of windscreen (1).
Windscreen underprotrusion (A):
X = Measurement stages 1... 4 mm
Pull off liner (1).
Press cover (2) on to A-pillar.
Make sure cover (2) is correctly fitted on A-pillar.
F06/F13 M6 only: additionally bond cover (2) to roof.
Version with HUD only:
Check HUD functions again and if necessary adjust.
Only with camera-based driver support systems:
Carry out camera calibration via diagnosis system.
Under Service Functions menu:
- Body
- Lane departure warning
- Calibrate camera
