Transmission Intermittently Goes into "P" or "N" after MSA Engine Start

MODEL
N55 vehicles with Continental high-pressure pump (HDP) and MEVD172 DME:

F10, F12, and F13 produced to 3/2012

F25 produced to 4/2012

N55 vehicles, with Bosch high-pressure pump (HDP) and MEVD1726 DME:

F01, F02, F06, and F30 produced to 12/2012

F07 produced 7/2012 to 12/2012

F10, F12, and F13 produced 3/2012 to 12/2012

F25 produced 4/2012 to 12/2012

Note:
The different N55 variants can also be determined by reading the vehicle's plant integration level:

N55 with MEVD172 (Continental HDP) - older (less) than F0xx-12-03-500.

N55 with MEVD1726 (Bosch HDP) - F0xx-12-03-500 and newer (higher)

SITUATION
The transmission can intermittently go into the Park (P) or Neutral (N) position afier an MSA engine start without any customer influence.

This problem is very sporadic, difficult to reproduce, and no relevant faults are stored.

CAUSE
Unfavorable DME/EGS software

CORRECTION
Program the vehicle using the latest version of ISTA/P to the appropriate target integration level.





N55 with Continental HDP - MEVD172 DME (revised software introduced with ISTA/P 2.49.2)





N55 with Bosch HDP - MEVD1726 DME (revised software introduced with ISTA/P 2.48.2)

Note:
When the ISTA system message displays:

Battery voltage only "XX.XX" V. Please connect charger.

Please note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section.

Labor operation code 00 00 006 is a Main labor operation. If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead.

Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Enter the Chassis Number, which consists of the last 7 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Click on the "Search" button, and then enter the applicable flat rate labor operation in the FR code field.

If a control module was working properly and/or had no related faults stored prior to vehicle programming and it fails to program correctly or requires initialization this additional work must be claimed with separate labor operations under the defect code listed above; refer to KSD2.
