51 71 407 Replace the rear spoiler
Rear spoiler is secured to tailgate with double-sided adhesive tape and window glass adhesive.
Dismantling is not possible without destruction.
The following notes are to be complied with:
- Notes for component bonding with double-sided adhesive tape
- Notes on window bonding repair kit
Do not install rear spoiler with poor accuracy of fit. A loosely placed rear spoiler may not protrude, especially at the corners. Check accuracy of fit before bonding.
Used tools and auxiliary materials:
Remove rear spoiler:
Tape off tailgate in area of rear spoiler (1) with yellow plastic adhesive tape (2).
Cut through bonding surface of rear spoiler (1) with cutting wire and wire pulling handles.
Guide cutting wire and wire pulling handles so that tailgate is not damaged.
Cut back residual adhesive bead of tailgate adhesive to approx. 0.5 mm.
Determine the installation dimensions for the rear spoiler:
Align template (1) to contour (2) of tailgate and secure on tailgate.
NOTE: Carry out work on the right side in the same way as for the left side illustrated here.
Clean tailgate in adhesive area.
Prepare rear spoiler:
Clean rear spoiler in adhesive area.
Apply double-sided adhesive tape (1) to rear spoiler (distance to spoiler outer edge approx. 1 mm).
The adhesion of the adhesive tape builds up significantly via the contact pressure. Therefore, press thumbs or fingers over the entire area.
Place tabs (2) of liner* outwards, if necessary secure to outer side of rear spoiler.
* Liner is the protective film for the bonding surface.
NOTE:
- It is imperative to avoid the formation of bubbles or creases, as well as severe overstretching, during application of the adhesive tape.
- If possible, wait for approximately 2 hours before installing the rear spoiler.
Prepare nozzle
Trim nozzle for adhesive outlet A = 5 mm.
Apply adhesive beads (1) dia. 5 mm onto rear spoiler in accordance with dimension (A to C).
Install the rear spoiler:
Perform the following repair work with a second person to give assistance.
Align rear spoiler (1) to templates (2) and place in position.
Carefully pull out liner (3) and stick rear spoiler to tailgate. Make sure the position of the rear spoiler is correct when pulling out the liner (3).
Press down with force on the rear spoiler using the backs of hands over the entire bonding surface of the double-sided adhesive tape, in particular at the edges.
In the area of the window glass adhesive make sure that no adhesive enters the visible area when pressing down.
Fix rear spoiler in position with yellow plastic adhesive tape.
Adhere to a minimum hardening time of 2 hours. Final strength is reached after approx. 16 to 24 hours.
