December 2012
Technical Service
SUBJECT
Vehicle Drifts to the Right when Traveling Straight Ahead
MODEL
F25
Produced to 11/2012
SITUATION
The customer complains the vehicle drifts to the right when traveling straight ahead, on an even road surface, without braking.
This procedure does not apply for a steering wheel that is not centered when driving straight ahead.
CAUSE
1. Tires
2. Tolerance in the coil springs of the front axle
CORRECTION
1. Inspect and make sure the vehicle was not previously involved in an accident or similar (e.g., driven into a curb or pothole) in which chassis or body components were damaged. Any accident damage must be properly rectified first.
2. Check and confirm that BMW approved tires are installed. If the tires are not BMW approved, the appropriate BMW approved tires must be installed.
3. Check whether the tires installed are of different sizes, from different manufacturers or have different tread patterns; replace as necessary.
4. Check whether the tires are unevenly and/or excessively worn.
5. Tires which are damaged must be replaced.
6. Check and, if required, correct the tire pressures.
7. Should the fault continue to occur after correcting the above items as necessary, replace the coil springs on the front axle, along with the lower pad, per Repair Instruction RA 31 33 100.
After installation, perform a wheel alignment check per RA 32 00 155.
