MODEL
F04 (ActiveHybrid 7) with the N63 engine produced from 2/17/2010 to 2/28/2011

SITUATION
The software status of the EME (Electric Motor Electronics) module is insufficient and could result in failure of the EME.

CAUSE
EME software status error

AFFECTED VEHICLES
[NEW] This Service Action involves F04 (ActiveHybrid 7) vehicles with the N63 engine which were produced from 2/17/2010 to 2/28/2011.

In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Service Action or Recall Campaign completed or is affected by this Service Action, first check the B-pillar label for code number 597. If code number 597 has been punched out, the campaign has already been performed. If code number 597 has not been punched out, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

PROCEDURE

Before starting work, you MUST observe the safety information with regard to handling hybrid vehicles.

If the affected vehicle also qualifies for the Service Action with code number 593, Program Control Units (EME), which is described in SI B12 12 11, that Service Action must be performed first.

Perform the DC/DC convertor adjustment service function procedure using the ISTA/D diagnostic system.

^ Connect an approved battery charger to the vehicle.

^ Connect the workshop system to the vehicle.

^ Perform a vehicle test.

^ [NEW] Perform the EME service function using the following path:

^ Activities / Service function / 01 Engine / Hybrid vehicle / Electric motor electronics / DC/DC converter calibration

^ Select and run the DC/DC converter adjustment test plan

^ [NEW] Alternatively, you may search for necessary test plan by inputting: AS 1236_DCDC_ABGL-EME: DC/DC converter adjustment. Once selected, run this test plan.

^ Clear fault memory

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Recall Campaign has been assigned code number 597. After the vehicle has been checked and/or corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-380) and:

A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1),

B. Punch out code number 597 (2), printed on the label; and

C. Affix the label to the B-Pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
