24 00 034 Removing and installing automatic transmission (GA8HP70Z) N63 AWD

Special tools required:







IMPORTANT:
- Do not let skin come in contact with transmission oil and do not inhale transmission oil vapours.
- Wear protective gloves.
- Ensure adequate ventilation







IMPORTANT:
After completion of work, check transmission oil level.
Use only the approved gearbox oil.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission.







Necessary preliminary work:
- Clamp off battery
- Remove both intake silencer housings
- Remove underbody protection at front and rear
- Remove reinforcement plate
Important notes on installation are described in this job item
- Remove exhaust system
- Remove front propeller shaft
- Detach propeller shaft at transfer box, release centre mount
- Tie back propeller shaft to underbody
- Caution:
- Bending the propeller shaft by an excessive angle can cause premature damage to the joint/propeller shaft.
- Support engine with jack when removing transmission







Release screw (2).
Disconnect cable (1).

Installation note:
- Release screw (2).
- Bring release lever (3) into contact with selector shaft by pressing slightly. Distance B=0 mm.
- Adjust cable by means of holder until distance A=≥ 1 mm is obtained.
- Tighten screw (2).







Release screw (1).
Remove cover (2).
Tightening torque 24 00 1AZ.







When unflanging the gearbox, pay attention to installation position of rubber connectors (1).







Release screw (1) and remove crankshaft sensor.
Disengage cable from holder (2).







Release screw (1).
Undo hydraulic line and holder.







Release screw (1).
Disconnect hydraulic lines (2) to transmission oil cooler.

Installation note:
Replace sealing rings.
Keep to installation sequence.







Crank engine at vibration damper in direction of rotation until screw (1) is visible in recess.
Undo all 6 bolts on torque converter.
Tightening torque 24 40 1AZ.







Prepare special tool (1) 24 4 161 (A) with shaped element (2) 24 4 166 as pictured.







Insert special tool 24 4 160 into recess of transmission housing and clamp gently with screw (1).
Raise by turning screw (2) and clamp down.
Then tighten down screw (1).







Screw on special tool 11 8 910.
Tightening torque 31 10 1AZ.







Adjust distance (1) between cross-member and facing using nuts (2).
Nuts (2) must be screwed down in opposite direction after distance has been adjusted.

IMPORTANT:
Distance:
N63 38 mm







Supporting transmission:
Support transmission with special tools 23 4 050,00 2 030.
Secure transmission to mounting with tensioning strap (1).
Repair work is are described in Gearbox holder.
After completion of work, check transmission oil level.







Release screws.
Remove transmission cross-member (1).
Tightening torque 22 32 3/4AZ.







Unplug connector (1) from transfer box control unit (longitudinal torque module).
Release screw (2).
Remove earth strap (3).







- Unlock and disconnect connector (1) by turning.
- Do not touch pins.
- Release cable from brackets.
- Insert special tool 24 2 390 in sealing cup.

IMPORTANT: Read and comply with important note.







Lower engine with transmission.
Secure engine and transmission in lowered position with engine support beam.
Then support transmission.







Release screws.
Tightening torque 24 00 1AZ.
Unflange transmission.







Installation note:
Bore (1) in drive plate must be accessible from opening in transmission housing.
Check that fitting sleeves (2) are correctly fitted.
Replace damaged fitting sleeves.







Installation note:
Rotate torque converter until bore hole in torque converter is flush with bore hole in drive plate.
Flange automatic transmission to engine.
