Television / Monitor: Description and Operation
Rear Display And Rear Display 2
Rear display and rear display 2
The rear displays are the display units of the RSE control unit (e.g. graphical display function for entertainment (music tracks, DVD menu), navigation, radio, air conditioning, communication etc.). The Rear Seat Entertainment system (RSE) is an optional extra.
Each rear display consists of a printed circuit board and a display module. The control unit function is integrated in the printed circuit board.
The rear displays are installed in the backrests of the front seats.
Functional description
The switch on / switch off signals are sent to the rear displays by the RSE control unit. The RSE control unit outputs the message to switch on / switch off on the MOST. The central gateway module (ZGM) is the data interface between MOST and K-CAN. The message on the MOST is translated by the central gateway module on the K-CAN and provided to the rear displays.
Each FD control unit is connected to the RSE control unit by means of an LVDS data line (Low Voltage Differential Signalling). All image information is transferred across the LVDS data line from the RSE control unit. The image information is processed in the FD control units and displayed on the screen.
Due to the Black Panel technology, the instrument cluster is always illuminated as of terminal R. A phototransistor is installed in the instrument cluster to calculate the necessary brightness (display, indicator and warning lights, scales, needles).
The brightness value calculated in the instrument cluster is output on the bus system (e.g. for the Central Information Display, rear displays). In the FD control units, the received brightness value is compared to the set brightness values. Darkening or brightening adapts the corresponding rear display to the surrounding brightness.
This ensures good legibility of the display.
Infrared transmitters for the infrared transfer to the headphones are also built into the rear displays. The infrared transmitters are directly connected to the RSE control unit.
Structure and inner circuit
The FD or FD2 control unit is connected to the vehicle electrical system by means of 2 plug connections.
The FD control units are bus users on the K-CAN.
The LVDS data line serves to transmit the picture information from the RSE control unit to the rear displays.
The 2 FD control units are supplied with terminal 30B by the rear power distribution box.
Pin assignments
The diagrams above show only the supply and bus connection. The current pin assignment can be found on the BMW ISTA (Integrated Service Technical Application) diagnosis system among the wiring diagrams. Click on the component code in the wiring diagram to activate the "Installation location" and "Pin assignment" tabs.
Nominal values
Observe the following nominal values for the control unit:
Variable Value
Power supply 9 to 16 V
Temperature range -40 to 85 °C
Diagnosis instructions
Failure of the component
If the communication to the rear display and/or rear display 2 fails, run the standard tests (global testing procedure). If there is an internal control unit fault, the following behavior is to be expected:
- Fault entry in the FD control unit or FD2 control unit
If the LVDS data line fails, the screen lights up "orange" for approx. 30 seconds then goes "dark".
No liability can be accepted for printing or other errors. Subject to changes of a technical nature.
