64 11 206 Removing And Installing/Renewing Heating Unit
WARNING:
Danger of injury.
Refrigerant circuit is under high pressure.
Avoid contact with refrigerant and refrigerant fluid.
Read and comply with safety instructions:
- Handling R 134a (tetrafluorethane) refrigerant
- Handling refrigerant fluid
- Notes for working on cooling system.
IMPORTANT:
Risk of damage.
Restart engine only when A/C system has been correctly filled.
NOTE: If air conditioning system is opened for more than 24 hours: Replace desiccant insert for A/C system
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Draw off refrigerant from air conditioning system
- Only N47, N57: remove acoustic cover
- Only E8x with N47: Remove both trailing links from spring strut dome
- Remove lower section of microfilter housing
- Remove expansion valve
- Remove instrument panel trim
- Only E9x: Remove complete steering column
- Disconnect plug connection for control unit for Car Access System
E8x only:
Release screws (1).
Tightening torque 32 31 2AZ.
Secure steering column against falling out.
Unfasten screws (2).
Tightening torque 32 31 2AZ.
E8x only:
Lower complete steering column (1) until steering wheel rests on driver's seat.
Installation note:
Check installation position of sleeve for steering shaft, correct if necessary.
WARNING: To avoid injury, cover holder (1) on support tube (2).
Only N47:
NOTE: Schematic diagram without cowl panel.
Release screws (1,2).
Remove heater end panel (3).
Installation note:
Make sure heater end panel is correctly seated.
M6x20 bolt must be fitted in middle.
Release protective cap (1) from bulkhead (2).
Release screw (1).
Tightening torque 64 11 1AZ.
Detach right footwell heating duct (1) in area (2) in direction of arrow.
Detach right footwell heating duct (1) with adapter (3) from heating and air-conditioning unit and remove in direction of arrow from right rear compartment heating duct (4).
NOTE: Lower instrument panel trim partially shown.
Detach left footwell heating duct (1) in area (2) in direction of arrow.
Detach left footwell heating duct (1) with adapter (3) from heating and air-conditioning unit and remove in direction of arrow from left rear compartment heating duct (4).
Installation note:
Make sure clamp (2) is correctly seated on left/right footwell heating duct (1).
Insert footwell heating duct (1) with adapter (3) in rear compartment heating duct (4).
Attach footwell heating duct (1) in area (4) to heating and air-conditioning unit. Make sure assembly is locked exactly at point (5).
Unclip refrigerant lines (1).
Unscrew nuts (2).
Feed out media passage sealing plate (3) and associated rubber grommet.
Installation note:
Makes sure media passage sealing plate and associated rubber grommet are correctly seated.
IMPORTANT: Make sure remaining coolant is removed completely.
Carefully blow through aluminium double pipe to remove remaining coolant from heat exchanger for heating system.
Installation note:
Bleeding cooling system and checking for watertightness
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect all necessary cable straps on support tube.
- Release wiring harnesses/cable channels and lay to one side.
- If necessary, remove control units/disconnect plug connections.
Installation note:
Make sure wiring harnesses/cable channels are correctly routed and secured.
Release screw (1) of heater on support tube (2).
Tightening torque 51 71 6AZ.
Detach wiring harness (3) from support tube (2).
Release screws (1) of heater on support tube (2).
Tightening torque 64 11 6AZ.
Release nuts (1) on right on support tube (2).
Tightening torque 51 71 5AZ.
Release nuts (1) on left on support tube (2).
Tightening torque 51 71 5AZ.
Release screw (1) on support tube (2).
Tightening torque 51 71 5AZ.
Release screws (1) on support tube (2) from bracket (3).
Tightening torque 51 71 4AZ.
Detach support tube (2) and remove from vehicle with assistance of a second person.
Remove heater.
Installation note:
Make sure heater (1) is correctly seated.
Installation note:
Make sure condensate drain (1) is correctly seated in grommet (2).
Replacement:
Effective 09/2009, vehicles with SA 606 (Navigation Business) or SA 609 (Navigation Professional) will no longer have vent hose (1) on heater (2). In addition, vehicles manufactured up to 09/2009 will no longer require vent hose (1) for parts replacement.
