54 37 015 Replacing The Middle Roof Shell Seal
Special tools required:
IMPORTANT:
- Sealing systems with different production dates are installed.
- Mixed installation is not permitted.
- Distinguishing features, sealing system.
Installation note:
- Screws with sealing compound must be replaced and must not be reused
- Thread of nut must be cleaned beforehand
New parts required:
- Butyl rope dia. 4 mm 83 22 2 159 535
- Butyl rope dia. 7 mm 83 19 0 416 659
- Butyl flat tape 1.5 mm x 15 mm 83 19 0 153 321

Removing seal:
Move soft top into position shown.
Release left and right screws (1).
Move soft top into service position.
Release the side of the interior roof lining (1) with a folding tool 00 9 321.
Installation note:
The clamps must not be damaged and must be pre-installed on the interior roof lining.
Release left and right screws (1).
Tightening torque: 54 37 01AZ.
Use a hot air blower to heat the seal to approximately 60 °C.
Loosen the front and back of the seal (1) with a folding tool 00 9 321 and thread out.
Remove the seal with a helper.
Remove butylene remnants from roof shell.
On-the-job safety:
- Comply with the relevant safety regulations
Clean adhesive area with adhesive remover.
Air drying time: ≥ equal to 1 minute
IMPORTANT: Adhesive area must be dry and free from dust and grease.
Prepare a Butyl flat tape with 30 mm length.
Apply the Butyl flat tape (1) beginning at the threaded insert.
Prepare Butyl rope dia. 4 mm.
Prepare Butyl rope dia. 7 mm and 250 mm length.
Apply Butyl rope dia. 4 mm in area (1).
Apply Butyl rope dia. 7 mm in area (2).
Prepare Butyl rope dia. 4 mm and 150 mm length.
Apply Butyl rope in area (1).
Prepare a Butyl flat tape with 30 mm length.
Apply the Butyl flat tape (1) beginning at the threaded insert.
Prepare Butyl rope dia. 7 mm and 250 mm length.
Apply Butyl rope (1) in the radius.
Prepare Butyl rope dia. 4 mm.
Apply Butyl rope (1).
Prepare Butyl rope dia. 4 mm and 150 mm length.
Apply Butyl rope (1) and separate excess Butyl.
Prepare Butyl rope dia. 7 mm and 500 mm length.
Apply Butyl rope in area (1) and separate excess Butyl. Make sure Butyl rope (1) is correctly positioned in the radius of the roof shell (2).
Apply Butyl on the right side of the vehicle analogous to the left.
IMPORTANT:
- Risk of leak.
- Connect all contact points of the Butyl ropes and smooth them out.
Installing the seal:
A second person will be need to help install the seal.
Connect the seal in front and back and position it on the side. Ensure that seal is correctly seated.
Loosely screw in new screws.
Complete and close the roof.
Align the seal flush in front and back and screw tight. Check gap dimensions.
Tightening torque: 54 37 01AZ.
Tight the screws (1) at rear left and right.
Tightening torque: 54 37 01AZ.
Checks:
- Check the seal for Butyl discharge. If possible, let the vehicle sit with closed roof for several hours. Repeat test.
Remove any discharged Butyl.
- Check for tight fit of the screws. There may not be a gap between the screw head and the seal.
- Carry out leakage test. Attach the hose on the roof and let water run over the affected area for 20 minutes.
