13 51 017 Removing and Installing/Replacing High-Pressure Fuel Pump

13 51 017 Removing and Installing/Replacing High Pressure Pump (N55)

Special tools required

WARNING:
Observe warning on cylinder head cover.
Disconnect negative battery terminal (risk of fire due to short circuit on removal).
Electric fuel pump starts up automatically when door is opened.
Carry out installation work on fuel system only with coolant temperature below 40 °C.

IMPORTANT:
Wear full face guard and protective gloves.
Fuel can emerge spontaneously at high speed when the high pressure line is released.

IMPORTANT:
Adhere to conditions of absolute cleanliness when working on the high-pressure fuel system.
Introduced dirt contamination can cause malfunctions in the system.
- Do not allow any dirt particles or foreign bodies to get into the system.
- Remove all traces of dirt contamination before removing lines or separate components.
- Use only fluff-free cloths.
- Seal all fuel system openings with protective caps or plugs.

IMPORTANT:
Ignition coils must not be contaminated by fuel.
The resistance of the silicone material is reduced significantly by contact with fuel, which may cause the ignition coil to fail.
Cover ignition coil with suitable means.

Necessary preliminary work:
- Remove acoustic cover
- Remove tank vent valve.

Recycling:
Fuel escapes when fuel lines are detached.
Catch and dispose of escaping fuel.
Observe country-specific waste disposal regulations.

Release screws (1) of holder (2). Take off holder.

Release screws (1) below cable channel (2).
Replace aluminium screws.

Installation note:
Adhere to tightening/torque sequence.

Disengage connector (1) from the fuel low-pressure sensor, oil temperature sensor and the high pressure pump and remove.

Remove oil temperature sensor (1).
Tightening torque 13 62 7AZ.

WARNING: Wear full face guard and protective gloves.

Release fuel lines and seal off with special tools (1) 13 5 161 and (2) 13 5 162.

Release nut (1) on high pressure pump.
Remove feed line (2).

Installation note:
Adhere to tightening/torque sequence.

Seal feed line with matching plug from set of special tools 32 1 270.

Release nut (1) on high pressure line.

Release nut (1) of high pressure line at rail.

Seal fuel line connections of high pressure pump (1) with matching plugs from set of special tools 32 1 270.

Release bolts with special tool 11 8 610.
Detach high pressure pump (1) and remove.
Engine oil can escape when pump is detached; have a cleaning cloth ready.

Installing high pressure pump:
Installation of high pressure pump is described separately from removal.

Replace sealing ring (1).
Clean contact surfaces.

When installing, turn high pressure pump (1) if necessary in direction of arrow until bore holes for screws are flush.

IMPORTANT:
Tighten screws of high pressure pump (1) with special tool 11 8 610 hand-tight only. It must still be possible to turn the high pressure pump at the flange.
his helps ensure that no strain is produced when the high pressure line is tightened.
If reusing pressure line, lightly grease threads of pressure connections. Threads of new pressure lines are already coated.

Tighten nut (1) of high pressure line only hand-tight.

Tighten nut (1) of high pressure line only hand-tight.

Install feed line (2) at the high pressure pump.
Tighten nut (1) only hand-tight.

When high pressure pump (1) has turned into position and is thus pre-assembled without strain with the high pressure line, tighten screws of high pressure pump (1) with special tool 11 8 610.
Tightening torque 13 53 1AZ.

Tighten down nut (1) with special tool 13 5 020.
Tightening torque 13 53 8AZ.

Tighten nut (1).
Tightening torque 13 53 8AZ.

Tighten down nut (1) with special tool 13 5 020.
In doing so, hold against low-pressure sensor flange.
Tightening torque 13 53 7AZ.

Install oil temperature sensor (1).
Tightening torque 13 62 7AZ.

Position cable channel (1) in front of threaded holes (2) and tighten screws hand-tight.
Replace aluminium screws.

Tighten screws (1) below cable channel (2).
Tightening torque 13 53 10AZ.
Replace aluminium screw.

Install connector (1) of fuel low-pressure sensor, oil temperature sensor and high pressure pump.

Install holder (1) for tank vent valve.
Install tank vent valve in holder.

Assemble engine.
Check fuel system for tightness.
Check function of DME.
