Removing and Installing/Replacing Rear Muffler



18 12 031 Replacing left or right rear silencer (N55)

Special tools required:







WARNING:
Risk of burning.
This repair work may only be carried out on an exhaust system which has cooled down.







NOTE:
Pictures show and descriptions refer to the left rear silencer.
The procedure is identical for the right intake duct.







Brace the rear silencer using special tool 31 2 220 or a suitable jack.







NOTE:
If the separation point is not marked by a punch mark on the pipe, determine the separation point by means of the pipe length on the new rear silencer.
Carry over separation point to faulty rear silencer and mark.
Secure rear silencer against falling off.
Cut through exhaust pipes at marked point with a suitable tool.







Unfasten nut.
Tightening torque 18 31 6AZ.







Pull off hose.
Release screw (1).
Tightening torque 18 31 2AZ.
Drain the rear silencer (2) and remove.







Installation note:
Connect rear silencer to centre silencer and right or left rear silencer using clamping sleeves.
Align rear silencer to rear apron.
Align and tighten clamps.
Tightening torque 18 31 5AZ.







NOTE: Check exhaust system for leaks.
