31 10 001 Completely Removing and Installing Front Axle With Engine and Transmission
31 10 001 Removing and installing complete front axle with engine and transmission (E9x-N55)Special tools required:
Important!
Removal weight approx. 250 kg to 450 kg.
Check payload of vehicle and unload if necessary.
Load front footwell with sandbags if necessary, approx. 200 kg.
Note safety information of assembly table!
Necessary preliminary work:
^ Position the vehicle centrally.
^ Clamp off the negative battery cable.
^ Suction off the air conditioning.
^ Remove left charge air duct.
^ Remove clean air pipe.
^ Remove front wheels.
^ Remove both brake calipers at the front and hang them to one side.
^ Completely remove propeller shaft (all-wheel drive vehicle).
^ Remove fan cowl with electric fan.
^ Drain coolant.
^ Detach all coolant hoses from engine.
^ Remove cowl panel cover.
^ Detach vacuum line from brake booster.
^ Detach engine wiring harness in electronics box and set aside.
^ Detach transmission oil line on heat exchanger.
Required preliminary work when exchanging the engine, transmission and front axle support (all-wheel drive vehicle)
The following work must be performed before the front axle support is removed with the assembly table.
^ Detach both output shafts on the inside of the axle drive.
Installation note:
In case of assembly replacement, release converter screws.
Crank engine at vibration damper in direction of rotation until screw (1) is visible in recess.
Release all bolts of torque converter with special tool 24 1 110.
Crank engine further and release remaining 5 bolts.
Tightening torque 24 40 1AZ.
Release screws (1) of A/C lines and disconnect.
Tightening torque 64 53 6AZ.
Installation note:
Replace sealing rings.
To avoid damage to the sealing rings, use special tool 00 9 030.
Unlock and remove pressure pipe on the right (1) on the charge air cooler.
Release screw.
Tightening torque 17 21 1AZ.
Detach engine oil pipe (1) from oil filter control housing.
Catch and dispose of emerging oil.
Open connector housing (1) in wheel arch on the right/left, pull line connections (2) out of bracket and detach.
Pull cable with rubber grommet out of brackets (3).
Recycling:
Catch and dispose of escaping fuel with auxiliary materials.
Observe country-specific waste disposal regulations.
Release screws (1) and remove protective plate (2).
Note:
Illustration (all-wheel drive vehicle).
Unlock and detach fuel line (1 and 2).
Close off fuel line (1) with special tool 13 5 161.
Close off fuel line (2) with special tool 13 5 162.
Release clamping bolt (1).
Return steering to straight-ahead drive setting and remove ignition key.
Pull lower section of steering shaft (3) in direction of arrow out of double pivot (4).
Detach upper section of steering shaft from steering column.
Installation note:
Clean thread to remove all remnants of screw locking adhesive.
Replace clamping bolt.
Clamping bolt must rest in groove (2) of lower section of steering shaft (3).
No subsequent retorquing permitted!
Steering shaft can only be attached in one position on double pivot and steering column.
Tightening torque 32 31 4AZ.

Important!
Coordinate determination always begins at the top.
Position engine assembly on table top A.
Position transmission on table top B.
Table top B is adjustable in a longitudinal direction (see arrow).

Position retaining elements (20) with fixture (50) on table top B for cross member at coordinates 1/3 and 2/7.
Position additional retaining element (20) with fixture (80) on table top B under transmission at coordinates 6/5.
Position retaining elements (20) with fixtures (70) on table top A for front axle support at coordinates 2/1 and 2/8.
Position fixture (10) on table top A for swivel bearing at coordinates 3/1 and 4/8.
Position retaining elements (20) with fixtures (60) on table top A for front axle support at coordinates 6/2 and 5/7.
Note:
Possible mounting points for front axle support and transmission.

Position retaining elements (20) with fixtures (50) on table top B for cross member at coordinates 1/4 and 3/7.
Position additional retaining element (20) with fixture (80) on table top B under transmission at coordinates 6/5.
Position retaining elements (20) with fixtures (60) on table top A for front axle support at coordinates 2/2 and 2/7.
Position fixture (10) on table top A for swivel bearing at coordinates 3/1 and 4/8.
Position retaining elements (20) with fixtures (70) on table top A for front axle support at coordinates 6/2 and 6/7.
Note:

Possible points for assembly table fixtures on front axle support and cross member
Attach the swivel bearing fixture (1) to brake disc with wheel studs (2) and fix with adjusting screw (3).
Centering pin missing: Make position of threaded bolt in relation to wheel arch.
Secure spring strut against dropping.
Unscrew nuts (1).
Remove spring strut downwards out of wheel arch.
Installation note:
Clean contact surface in spring strut dome.
Align spring strut using centering pin to bore in wheel arch or stud bolts to the marks in wheel arch and push upwards.
Replace self-locking nuts.
Tightening torque 31 31 1AZ.
Release screws of cross member (illustration of manual transmission).
Tightening torque 23 71 2AZ/5AZ.
Release screws (1-3).
Installation note:
Screw (1) M12 x 90
Screw (3) M12 x 53
Screw (2) M12 x 145
Check thread for damage, repair.
Tighten down first screws (1) and then screws (2,3).
Tightening torque 31 10 1AZ.
Installation note:
Position assembly table with front axle support.
The inclination of the table lift (1) can be adjusted using adjusting screws (2).
Completing the engine.
Fill and bleed hydraulic system.
Check line connections for leak tightness
Check and add engine oil.
Check fault entry.
