SUBJECT
N55 Engine: Various VVT Faults Stored in DME Memory

MODEL
E70 (X5) with N55 engine produced from June 1, 2010 and up to July 31, 2010

E71 (X6) with N55 engine produced from June 1, 2010 and up to July 31, 2010

E82 and E88 (1 Series) with N55 engine produced from June 1, 2010 and up to July 31, 2010

E90, 92, and E93 (3 Series) with N55 engine produced from June 1, 2010 and up to July 31, 2010

F07 and F10 (5 Series) with N55 engine produced from June 1, 2010 and up to July 31, 2010

The customer states that the Service Engine Soon lamp is illuminated; the Vehicle enters reduced power mode, and one of the following drivability concerns has occurred:

^ Engine cranks but will not start

^ Loss of power

^ Engine has poor throttle response (reduced power mode is displayed).

One or more of the following faults are also stored in DME memory:

E70, E71, E82, E88, E90, E91, E92 and E93

^ 3719 - Valvetronic, voltage supply: short-circuit to earth

^ 2DCB - Valvetronic actuator motor: overload

^ 2DBB - Valvetronic actuator motor: component protection, system shutoff

^ 2DE5 - Valvetronic actuator motor: overload

^ 2DE9 - Valvetronic actuator motor: component protection, system shutoff

^ 2DCE - Valvetronic System: adjustment not possible

^ 2DCF - Valvetronic system: no movement detected

F07 and F10

^ 1F0514 - Valvetronic, voltage supply: short circuit to earth

^ 135402 - Valvetronic actuator motor: overload

^ 135302 - Valvetronic actuator motor: component protection, system shutoff

^ 134A02 - Valvetronic actuator motor: overload

^ 135604 - Valvetronic system: control deviation too great

^ 135608 - Valvetronic system: no movement detected

^ 133B04 - Valvetronic system: adjustment not possible

CAUSE

^ Sporadic errors caused by a DME SW error; or

^ VVT motor and eccentric shaft mechanical tolerances.

PROCEDURE A

If one of the following fault codes has been stored in the DME memory, read out the integration level of the vehicle.

E70, E71, E82, E88, E90, E91, E92 and E93

^ 2DCF - Valvetronic system: no movement detected

F07 and F10

^ 135608 - Valvetronic system: no movement detected

If one of the above fault codes has been stored in the DME memory, read out the integration level of the vehicle. If necessary reprogram the vehicle, replace the eccentric shaft and the VVT (variable valve gear) actuator motor; refer to the following Repair Instructions:

REP 11 37 020 Remove and refit/replace servomotor for eccentric shaft (N55)

REP 11 37 005 Remove and refit/replace eccentric shaft (N55)

E70 and E71: Reprogram the vehicle if the integration level is not E070-10-09-511 or higher.

E82, E88, E90, E91, E92 and E93: Reprogram the vehicle if the integration level is not E89x-10-09-511 or higher.

F07: Reprogram the vehicle if the integration level is not F001-10-09-510 or higher.

F10: Reprogram the vehicle if the integration level is not F010-10-09-510 or higher.

PROCEDURE B

If one of the faults shown below is stored in the DME then follow the applicable test plan provided for that fault only in the current version of ISTA/D.

[NEW] E70, E71, E82, E88, E90, E91, E92 and E93

^ 3719 - Valvetronic, voltage supply: short circuit to earth

^ 2DCB - Valvetronic actuator motor: overload

^ 2DBB - Valvetronic actuator motor: component protection, system shutoff

^ 2DE5 - Valvetronic actuator motor: overload

^ 2DE9 - Valvetronic actuator motor: component protection, system shutoff

^ 2DCE - Valvetronic system: adjustment not possible

[NEW] F07 and F10:

^ 1F0514 - Valvetronic, voltage supply: short circuit to earth

^ 135402 - Valvetronic actuator motor: overload

^ 135302 - Valvetronic actuator motor: component protection, system shutoff

^ 134A02 - Valvetronic actuator motor: overload

^ 135604 - Valvetronic system: control deviation too great

^ 133B04 - Valvetronic system: adjustment not possible 135604 - Valvetronic system: control deviation too great

Note:
When the ISTA system message displays:

Battery voltage only "XX.XX" V. Please connect charger.

Please note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section.
