SITUATION
The customer states that a noise described as whistling, hooting or squealing can be heard from the engine compartment while the engine is running. The noise may be more apparent after the engine has reached operating temperature.
[NEW] CAUSE
The noise is due to a manufacturing error in the front or rear crankshaft oil seal.
[NEW] PROCEDURE
Procedure A: Rear crankshaft seal noise verification and repair solution.
1. Start the engine and allow it to idle to reproduce the customers concern. The noise will be more apparent from under the vehicle, near the transmission bell housing.
2. After the noise is reproduced, partially loosen the engine oil fill cap, resulting in a reduction of the crankcase pressure.
3. If the noise diminishes when the oil fill cap is loosened, the noise is related to the rear crankshaft oil seal. Replace the rear crankshaft oil seal according to Repair Instruction REP 11 14 151.
Procedure B: Front crankshaft seal noise verification and repair solution.
1. While driving the car, a noise can be reproduced when actuating the brake pedal; once the noise is created, it will not diminish.
2. After the noise is reproduced, partially loosen the engine oil fill cap; this will reduce the crankcase pressure.
3. If the noise diminishes when the oil fill cap is loosened, the noise is related to the front crankshaft oil seal. Replace the front crankshaft oil seal according to Repair Instruction 11 14 005.
