Exhaust Manifold: Service and Repair

18 40 040 Removing and installing/replacing exhaust manifold (S63)





Warning!
Scalding hazard!
Only perform these tasks on an engine that has cooled down.





Necessary preliminary tasks:
^ Remove left turbocharger.
^ Remove right turbocharger.
^ Remove alternator





Note:
Illustration shows N63 engine; the procedure is S63 identical.

Release screws (1).

Tightening torque 18 31 4AZ.





Release screws (1).

Tightening torque 18 31 4AZ.

Remove heat shield (2).





Note:
Illustration shows N63 engine; the procedure is S63 identical.

Release screws (1).

Tightening torque 18 31 4AZ.

Remove heat shield (2) at rear left.





Release bolts along line (1).

Replace screws.

Feed out exhaust manifold (2) and remove.





Installation:
Replace gaskets (1).

Install seal with the coated side and retaining lugs (2) on top.





Install exhaust manifold:
Insert exhaust manifold.

Insert centering bolt (1) into the centering bore and screw in approximately 5 turns.

Make bolts (2) and (3) penetrate oblong holes and tighten to initial torque.

Tightening torque 18 40 1AZ.

Make bolts (4) and (5) on cylinder bank 5-8 penetrate oblong holes and tighten to initial torque.

Tightening torque 18 40 1AZ.





Make the rest of the bolts penetrate.

Installation:
The exhaust manifold is tightened with a 2-fold final torque.

Observe tightening sequence.

Initially tighten all bolts in the tightening sequence 1-16.

Tightening torque 18 40 2AZ.

Tighten all bolts in the 2nd pass in the tightening sequence 1-16.

Tightening torque 18 40 2AZ.





Assemble engine.

Check exhaust system for leaks.
