Situation:
A new, revised paint brochure will shortly be available for assessing and repairing body parts in conjunction with corrosion damage.
This will contain examples for defining paint and corrosion damage and will give information about remedies and repairs. Details about the content and distribution will be published in Service Information bulletin 41 01 08 (452).
The procedure to followed in the event of abrasion points (e.g. during repairs on the tailgate) will be described in detail in a further Service Information bulletin 41 01 07 (376). In the future, this will be continuously updated to the latest technical specifications.
Abrasion points on a painted surface are not generally a reason for replacing a part.
Procedure:
IMPORTANT:
- Repair of corrosion damage on in case of specific customer complaint.
- If technically possible, all attached parts must be retained and converted.
Fundamentally, the following procedure should be observed in cases of corrosion damage:
1. Use the new paint brochure to identify fault patterns at the damage area, and then use these to derive repair actions.
2. Dismantle the body area affected as described in the repair instructions.
3. Repair the body areas affected by corrosion, complying with both the repair instructions and the BMW paintwork handbook.
4. Reassemble the vehicle, reusing the attached parts removed.
NOTE: While repairing body parts affected by corrosion damage, only the following may be reimbursed:
- Replacement for body part affected by corrosion (only for perforation rusting without repair of parts)
- Paint
- Conversion of attached parts
- Cavity coating
