Removing and Installing / Replacing Right Eccentric Shaft
11 37 008 Removing and installing/replacing right eccentric shaft (N62 from 10/03 and N62TU)
IMPORTANT:
Eccentric shaft starting 10/2003:
Eccentric shafts of cylinders 1 to 4 and 5 to 8 are different and must not be mixed up.
(cylinder bank 1 to 4)
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove servomotor for right eccentric shaft
- Remove ignition coils on cylinder bank 1 to 4
- Remove spark plugs on cylinder bank 1 to 4
- Remove right cylinder head cover
- Remove intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters on right
- Remove right intake camshaft
Removal:
Removal of eccentric shaft is described separately from installation.
NOTE: Operations are only described at one bearing position. The procedure is identical for the other bearing positions.
Carefully tilt the bearing shell (1) to one side and simultaneously remove towards top.
Lift off eccentric shaft (2).
Remove magnetic wheel if necessary:
NOTE: Carefully clamp in eccentric shaft (1) with jaw protectors (2) into vice as shown in graphic.
IMPORTANT: Danger of mix-up:
For the eccentric shaft, left and right and front and rear can easily be mixed up.
If necessary, mark the side where the magnet wheel was mounted.
NOTE:
Magnet wheel (1) is extremely magnetic.
After removal, place magnet wheel in a plastic bag to protect it against metal chips.
Release screw and remove magnet wheel (1).
IMPORTANT: Needle bearings (1) break very easily during removal and installation.
Carefully press needle bearing (1) apart at split position only to such an extent that it can be removed from eccentric shaft.
NOTE: When the needle bearings are renewed, the bearing shells must also be renewed.
Carefully press the bearing shell (1) to one side and simultaneously remove towards top.
Installation:
Removal of eccentric shaft is described separately from installation.
NOTE:
Oil eccentric shaft on the bearing positions.
Renew needle bearing (1).
IMPORTANT: Needle bearings easily break during installation.
Carefully press needle bearing (1) apart at split position only to such an extent that it can be fitted above the eccentric shaft.
IMPORTANT: Observe direction of installation of eccentric shaft
Installing magnetic wheel:
NOTE: Carefully clamp in eccentric shaft (1) with jaw protectors (2) into vice as shown in graphic.
IMPORTANT: An incorrect assembly will lead to engine damage.
Assemble eccentric shaft for cylinder bank 1 to 4:
Machined rounded area (3) and the groove in the eccentric shaft must point towards front as shown in graphic.
Unmachined area on eccentric points to right.
Secure magnet wheel (1) with lug in the eccentric shaft groove.
IMPORTANT: Only install original antimagnetic screw (2).
Insert screw (2) and tighten down.
Tightening torque 11 37 1AZ.
NOTE: Renew bearing shell (1) of needle bearing.
IMPORTANT: Bearing shells (1) must be installed so that ends of bearing shells (1) face each other as shown in graphic.
Insert bearing shell (1) into bearing bracket so that it is secured in bore hole (2).
Lubricate bearing shells (1) with engine oil.
Cylinder bank 1 to 4:
IMPORTANT: Machined rounded area (1) of eccentric points inwards.
Magnet wheel (2) is to the rear.
Insert eccentric shaft as shown in graphic.
Lubricate bearing shells (1) with engine oil.
Install bearing shells (1).
Bearing shells (1) must snap audibly into place.
Check correct position of bearing shells (1).
Install intake right camshaft.
Assemble engine.
