Removing and Installing/Replacing Exhaust Camshaft

11 31 025 Removing and installing or replacing the exhaust camshaft (M57T2-SCR)

Special tools required:





Necessary preliminary work:
^ Removing cylinder head cover
^ Remove vacuum pump

Remove protective cap in direction of arrow.





Installation Note:
Reinstall protective cap with some grease.





Crank engine at central bolt.

Secure crankshaft at flywheel with special tool 11 6 080.





Position (1) of intake camshaft gear flush with cylinder head.

Position (2) of exhaust camshaft gear flush with cylinder head.

Evenly release bolts of intake camshaft bearing caps A1 to A7 in 1/2 revolution increments from outside to inside.





Remove exhaust camshaft in direction of arrow.





Note:
Worn rocker arms may only be reused on the same grooves of the camshaft.





Important!
These screws must "not" be removed.

A Exhaust camshaft





Insert exhaust camshaft.

Position (1) of intake camshaft gear flush with cylinder head.

Position (2) of exhaust camshaft gear flush with cylinder head.

If necessary, re-secure camshafts.





Marking (1) on intake camshaft must be between markings (2) on exhaust camshaft.

See graphic.

The exhaust camshaft bearing caps are legibly marked A 1 ... A 7 from the exhaust side.





Oil all bearing positions.

Fit bearing caps.

Insert all bolts and initially tighten without play.

Tighten down exhaust camshaft bearing caps in 1/2 revolution increments evenly from inside to outside.





Cams of both camshafts must point to top right.

Place special tool 11 6 321on exhaust camshaft.

Secure special tool 11 6 321 with special tool 11 6 322.

Installation Note:
The exhaust camshaft only has to be checked, setting is not possible.





Secure special tool 11 6 254 on the cylinder head with screws (1).

Check exhaust camshaft side clearance.

Set up special tool 11 6 252 with dial gauge.





Refer to Technical Data.

Note:
Illustration shows intake camshaft.

Procedure for exhaust camshaft is identical.





If necessary, adjust valve timing.

Assemble engine.
