SUBJECT
Rattle from the Front Seat Head Restraints

MODEL

E71 (X6) equipped with Sport seats (SA 481) and produced up to February 13, 2009

SITUATION
A plastic rattling noise is heard from the driver and/or passenger head restraints while driving over rough roads.

CAUSE
Clearance exists between the post of the head restraint and the plastic guide sleeve through which it is installed. This clearance is such that relative movement of the post will create a rattle as it contacts the
sleeve.

CORRECTION
Isolate the guide sleeve contact area using felt tape.

PROCEDURE
Do not replace any parts, as this will not provide a solution.

1. Remove the affected restraint guide sleeves per Repair Instruction REP 52 13...

2. Cut 2 strips of felt tape to 90x3mm.

3. Apply the strips of felt tape to the inside of the guide sleeves, as shown in the attachment B520509 procedure.pdf

NOTE:
The tape must be installed on the forwardmost surface of the guide sleeve.

4. Fold over the ends of the felt tape (about 15mm each) and press them firmly against the outside of the guide sleeve.

5. Install the guide sleeve and reinstall the head restraint.
