VANOS solenoid valve, exhaust, activation: open circuit

Fault description
The diagnostic function monitors the electrical connection
between the DME and the VANOS solenoid valve on the
exhaust side.

Condition for fault identification
Test condition:
The fault is recognized when an open wire is present.
Potential problem source(s):
- Open circuit in wire between the DME and the exhaust-
side VANOS solenoid valve.
- Defect in power supply to VANOS exhaust-side solenoid
valve
- Exhaust-side VANOS solenoid valve defective
Terminal condition: Terminal 15
Voltage condition:
- Electrical system voltage > 10 V
Temperature condition:
- None
Time condition:
- None
Other conditions:
- none

Condition for fault memory entry
This fault is logged in the control module's fault memory if
it remains present for longer than 0.5 sec.

Action in service
- Check wire from DME to VANOS exhaust-side solenoid
valve
- Check power supply to VANOS exhaust-side solenoid
valve
- Replace VANOS solenoid valve on exhaust side

Fault effect and breakdown warning
Breakdown notice:
- If the engine does run, the vehicle can be driven.
Possible apparent symptoms:
- Engine difficult or impossible to start. There may also be a
palpable loss of power.
