VANOS, inlet: control fault, position not reached

Fault description
The diagnostic function monitors control of the intake-side
VANOS on Bank 1. The deviation between specified and
actual data is monitored for the entire duration of the driving
cycle.

Condition for fault identification
Test condition:
The fault is recognized when the VANOS fails to trail the
specified value within the specified period.
Potential problem source(s):
- Extreme contamination on or seizure at VANOS solenoid
valve
- Stiction or defect in VANOS assembly
Terminal condition: none
Voltage condition:
- Electrical system voltage > 10 V
Temperature condition:
- Engine temperature between 0 °C and 110 °C
Time condition:
- None
Other conditions:
- Start process terminated, engine running

Condition for fault memory entry
This fault is logged in the control module's fault memory
immediately.

Action in service
- Check VANOS solenoid valve for contamination, respond
to severe contamination by removing filter screen with tab
- Install new solenoid valve (valve seized)
- Replace VANOS unit
