SITUATION
Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) levels may exceed legal limits.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Recall Campaign involves MY 2009 E90 335d vehicles with the M57Y engine produced from 11/12/2008 to 1/16/2009.

[NEW] In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Emissions Recall Campaign completed or is affected by this Recall Campaign, first check whether the Recall Completion Label, SD 92-393, is attached to the right (passenger) rear side of the hood in the engine compartment, close to the windshield. If the label is found, the Campaign has already been performed. If the Recall Completion Label is not present, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The chassis number ranges listed are only for informational purposes, and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

PROCEDURE
On all affected vehicles, inspect and replace the diesel particulate filter, if needed, per the procedure below:

1. Remove the underside protection panels to obtain visual access to the DPF (refer to Repair Instruction RA 5147490).

2. There are several identification marks on the right-hand side of the DPF (see picture). Determine the sequence of the numbers surrounded by the red line in the picture, with the help of a mirror. If the sequence of numbers is 0003007421, the DPF must be replaced.

Replacing the diesel particulate filter

To replace the DPF, proceed as recommended in Repair Instruction RA 18 31 080 - Remove and refit/replace the diesel particulate filter (M57T2).
