SUBJECT
Service Action: Replace Both Side Rear Lamps in the Side Panel
MODEL
E91 (3 Series Sports Wagon) produced from July 23, 2007 to August 31, 2009
SITUATION
The seal on the rear lamps in the side panel emits a gas that causes damage to the electrical connectors on the LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) inside the rear lamp.
CAUSE
Poor rear lamp sealing causes the failure of all the LED lights.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E91 (3 Series) vehicles which were produced from July 23, 2007 to August 31, 2009.
In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Service Action completed or is affected by this Service Action, first check the B-pillar label for code number 591. If code number 591 has been punched out, the Service Action has already been performed. If code number 591 has not been punched out, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System), or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
CORRECTION
Replace both side panel rear lights.
Refer to ISTA (Integrated Service Technical Application) Repair Instruction REP 63 21 220 "Remove and refit/replace left-hand (or right-hand) rear light (on side panel)".
PARTS INFORMATION
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 591. After the vehicle has been checked and/or corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-395 and:
A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
B. Punch out code number 591 (2), printed on the label; and
C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
