Removal and Replacement

11 12 100 Removing and installing the cylinder head (M57T2-SCR)

Special tools required:





Necessary preliminary work:
^ Drain coolant
^ Remove drive belt for alternator
^ Remove low-pressure turbocharger
^ Remove camshafts

Important!
Fit new cylinder head bolts.





Do not wash off bolt coating.
There must be no oil or coolant in the blind holes (risk of cracking).
Protect alternator against engine oil and coolant. (Risk of damage).
Cover alternator with suitable auxiliary materials.
Assemble charge air hoses without grease and dry.





Remove all rocker arms (1) and set down in order.

Remove all valve clearance compensating elements (2) and set down in order.

Important!
Worn rocker arms may only be reused on the same grooves of the camshaft.





Release screws (1).

Unfasten cylinder head bolts from outside to inside in following sequence 14 ... 1.





Installation Note:
Fit new cylinder head bolts.





Important!
The glow elements protrude at the sealing surface and may be damaged when the cylinder head is put down.
If necessary, remove glow elements with special tool 11 6 050.
Tightening torque 12 23 2AZ.
Remove cylinder head.





Remove cylinder head gasket (1).

Installation Note:
Observe number of holes (2) of cylinder head gasket.

Remove all traces of oil and coolant from all blind hole threaded holes (3) in crankcase.

Clean sealing surface (4).

Note:
Clean sealing surface of cylinder head and engine block.





Remove gasket remnants with hardwood scraper.

If the piston protrusion is changed (e.g. replacing piston) the cylinder head gasket thickness must be recalculated.





Note:
Joints between gear case cover and engine block are sealed with sealing strips stuck on as standard.

It is not necessary to apply a permanently elastic sealant.





Check fitting bush (1) for damage and replace if necessary.

Transitions (2) must be absolutely free of grease.

Fit new cylinder head gasket.

Carefully fit cylinder head.

Fit new cylinder head bolts.





Tighten down the cylinder head bolts in order 1 ... 14.

Tightening torque 11 12 1AZ.





Use special tool 00 9 120 for torsion angle adjustment.





Tighten down screws (1).

Installation Note:
Worn rocker arms may only be reused on the same grooves of the camshaft.





Oil camshaft bearing positions and bearing caps.

Install all rocker arms and compensating elements.





Assemble engine.
