Technical Service

This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B54 08 08 dated November 2009.

SUBJECT
The Sunroof's Rear Glass Panel Does Not Close from the Vent Position

MODEL
E70 (X5) produced up to 4/2009

SITUATION
When the sunroof is closed from the vented position, the rear glass panel will not close. The rear glass panel may remain in the fully vented position, or one side may start to close, giving the panel an uneven appearance.

CAUSE
The tilt mechanism for the rear glass has separated from the sliding piece which drives it. This separation may occur on one or both sides of the sunroof cassette. This is caused by poor retention of the tilt mechanism, or a rear glass panel that was produced out of specification, which puts undue tension on the mechanism.

CORRECTION
Depending on the production date, replace the left and right tilt mechanisms, and/or replace the rear glass panel.

PROCEDURE

For vehicles produced up to 3/2008:

1. Remove the rear glass panel per Repair Instruction REP 54 10 175.

2. Locate the tilt mechanism, which is the part of the mechanism to which the glass panel bolts.

3. Place a flat head screwdriver (1) under the front edge of the tilt mechanism (2), directly under the forward threaded hole to which the glass panel secures.

4. Press on the end of the screwdriver to push the mechanism toward the outside of the cassette (1), in order to release the tilt mechanism from the guide rail. Then press down on the end of the screwdriver (2) to lever the tilt mechanism up and out of the rail.

5. Replace the mechanism using the part from the repair kit. Slide the rear edge of the mechanism back into the rail of the cassette, in the same way that the previous one was removed. Line up the notch in the mechanism (1) with the fixing point (2), and press the mechanism down until it snaps into the rail.

6. Reinstall the sunroof glass panel, and operate the tilt function of the sunroof 15 times in succession.

^ If the mechanism pops out of the channel or seems loose in the cassette rail, continue with step 7.

^ If the sunroof is now operating correctly, no further repairs are necessary.

7. Replace the rear glass panel of the sunroof cassette per Repair Instruction REP54 10 175.

8. Adjust the new rear glass panel per Repair Instruction REP 54 13 003.

For vehicles produced between 3/2008 and 4/2009:

1. Replace the rear glass panel of the sunroof cassette per Repair Instruction REP54 10 175.

2. Adjust the new rear glass panel per Repair Instruction REP 54 13 003.
