33 10 010 Remove/Install/Replace Rear Axle Final Drive (M3, M Coupe)
Special tools required:
WARNING:
Danger of injury.
Rear axle final drive must be lashed with tensioning strap 33 5 206 to prevent it falling out when the output shafts are forced off.
IMPORTANT:
The rear axle final drive of the M3 (S65), M Coupe (N54T) has been balanced.
Therefore, the following points must be observed.
Non-compliance can lead to humming noises.
M3, M Coupe vehicles with a marked rear axle final drive on the outside of the drive flange (coloured dot) (1):
- white dot (1): no measures required
- blue dot (1): Measures absolutely required
- yellow dot (1): Measures absolutely required
IMPORTANT:
If a measure is required, the rear axle final drive must be identified before the screw connection based on the following instructions.
There are two systems for the screw connection on drive flange of the rear axle final drive.
System A:
- Colour coding (2) in interior cone of the drive flange.
System B:
- NO colour coding (2) in interior cone of drive flange.
The colour dots on the exterior of the drive flange are assigned to the respective bolting point and mean that the corresponding measure must be installed here.
System A:
- Yellow mark (1) - fit green shiny screw (2).
- Blue mark (1)-fit black screw (2).
System B: M3 (S65) only
- Blue mark (1) - black washer (2) between screw head and shim.
- Yellow mark (1) - silver washer (2) between screw head and shim.

Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove and tie up propeller shaft at the rear axle final drive.
- Remove and tie up both output shafts at the rear axle final drive.
33 5 200Position special tool on workshop jack. 00 2 030
33 5 200Support rear axle final drive unit with special tool .
Lash rear axle final drive unit with tightening strap 33 5 206 to special tool 33 5 200.
Release screws (1 and 2).
00 2 030Slowly lower workshop jack .
IMPORTANT: Adhere to the following installation sequence in order to prevent distortion of the rear axle final drive during installation and thereby avoid potential complaints about noise.
installation sequence:
1. Insert the rear axle final drive into the rear axle support using the workshop jack 00 2 030 and special tool 33 5 200.
2. Insert screws (1) (do not tighten).
3. Insert screw (2) from the front and replace nut (do not tighten).
4. Lower workshop jack 00 2 030.
5. Tighten down screws (1).
Tightening torque 33 17 1AZ.
6. Tighten screw (2).
Tightening torque 33 17 1AZ.
After installation:
- Check final drive oil level, correct if necessary.
