Interior - Rattling Noise From The Glove Box Area

SUBJECT
Rattling Noises from Around the Glove Box

MODEL
F01, F02 (7 Series) produced up to February 3, 2009

SITUATION
When driving over rough roads, a rattling noise can be heard from around the glove box area.

CAUSE

1. Up to 11/18/08: The glove box housing is making contact with the adjacent support piece.

2. Up to 2/3/09: The pivot shafts on the glove box cover are rattling against the glove box support.

CORRECTION

1. Isolate the cross support above the globe box door, using felt tape.

2. Realign the pivot shaft brackets.

PROCEDURE

For vehicles produced up to 11/18/08, complete Procedures A and B.

For vehicles produced between 11/18/08 and 2/3/09, complete only Procedure B.

Procedure A:

1. Remove the glove compartment and the storage tray above the glove compartment, per Repair Instruction REP 51 16 366.

2. Install a strip of felt tape to the front of the cross support above the glove box door, as displayed in the attachment B511309Procedure.pdf

Procedure B:

1. Remove the lower instrument panel trim from underneath the glove box per Repair Instruction REP 51 45 195, to expose the 2 glove box door hinges.

2. Loosen the fasteners on the glove box hinges and rotate the hinge in the direction of the arrow shown in the attachment B511309Procedure.pdf. Once they are rotated to the point where some resistance can be felt in the metal shaft, resecure the fasteners.
