SUBJECT
Rattle Noise from the Washer Fluid Reservoir

MODEL
E82, E88 (1 Series) produced up to 10/2008

SITUATION
When driving over rough surfaces, a low-frequency rattling noise can be heard inside the vehicle's cabin.

The noise typically sounds as though it is coming from the front right instrument panel/footwell area.

The noise does not occur when the washer fluid reservoir is empty.

CAUSE
The washer fluid reservoir vibrates against the adjacent body structure when driving over rough roads.
This only occurs with fluid in the tank, as it will splash back and forth, moving the reservoir slightly.

CORRECTION
Modify an existing spacer on the washer fluid reservoir.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the washer fluid reservoir per Repair Instruction REP 61 71 061.

2. Identify the middle spacer on the back side of the reservoir (1).

3. Cut the spacer in half and remove half of the spacer from the reservoir. Install the removed spacer over the remaining half of it. Therefore, the spacer will be half as long, but twice as thick.

If the backing on the removed spacer is no longer tacky, use BMW contact adhesive to secure it to the remaining spacer.

4. Reinstall the washer fluid reservoir and retest.
