54 34 120 Replacing Soft Top Fabric

Special tools required:







WARNING:
- Soft top becomes pressureless without a warning signal.
- For all repair work, secure soft top with a suitable support tool against collapsing.
- Ensure soft top is supported in the middle.
- Ignition must remain switched off during the repair work.
- Failure to comply with this instruction may result in the hydraulic valves incurring preliminary damage.







Necessary preliminary work:
- Remove cowl panel trim







Release screw (1) on left and right from roofliner plastic profile (2) on roof tip.

Tightening torque 54 34 12AZ.

Installation note:
Retaining lug of roofliner plastic profile must be correctly seated in roof tip guide.







Pull roofliner clamping profile (1) out of roof tip channel (2).

IMPORTANT: Risk of damage to roofliner. Remove retainers from roofliner clamping profile (1) for subsequent work steps.

Installation note:
Pay attention to centre markings on roofliner clamping profile (1) and roof tip channel (2).

Refit retainers on roofliner clamping profile (1). If necessary, remove all retainers from roof tip channel (2).







Remove end piece retainers (1) on left and right.

Disconnect zip fastener (2) connecting soft top fabric to roofliner.

NOTE:
Build date from 09/2008:
- Zip fastener between roofliner and soft top fabric is omitted.
- Mixed fitting is permitted in a spare part situation.










Installation note:
Pay attention to centre markings (3) on both zip fasteners.

Close zip fastener with zip fastener slide (1) from fastening set or with closing pliers (2).

IMPORTANT:
- Zip fastener must close easily, do not use force to close.
- Zip fastener must be fully closed.

Insert end piece retainers through both zip fastener ends and close with pliers.







Work steps for front bow and main bow:

Release screws (1).

Tightening torque 54 34 13AZ.

Unclip roofliner clamping profile (2) from bow.







Work steps for front bow and main bow:

Detach soft top fabric tightening strip (1) from bow.

Installation note:
Stick on fabric tightening strip (1) with soft top closed.

Remove protective film from adhesive surface.

Stick fabric tightening strip (1) tightly to bow.







Release screws (1) on clamping strip (2).

Tightening torque 54 34 14AZ.

Disengage soft top fabric over entire width from cowl panel.

Installation note:
Make sure soft top fabric welt (3) is correctly seated in clamping strip (2).







Disconnect rivet connection (1) from controlled folding straps with awl (2) and feed out. Drive awl (2) into rivet and open rivet connection with circular movements.

Installation note:
Feed in controlled folding straps untwisted.

Remove remnants of rivets.







Disconnect rivet connection (1) from controlled folding straps with awl (3) and feed out. Drive awl (3) into rivet and open rivet connection with circular movements.

Release screw (2) from controlled folding straps and feed out.

Tightening torque 54 34 15AZ.

Installation note:
Feed in controlled folding straps untwisted.

Remove remnants of rivets.







Pull C-pillar clamping profile (1) from below upwards out of rear roof frame seal rail (2).

Installation note:
Make sure C-pillar clamping profile guide lug (1) is correctly seated in rear roof frame seal rail (2).

If necessary, remove all retainers from rear roof frame seal rail (2).







Detach adhesive tape (1).

Disengage tension cable (2) and pull out of soft top fabric guide (3).

Installation note:
Feed tension cable (2) with suitable insertion aid into soft top fabric guide (3).

Make sure tension cable (2) is correctly seated in bush (4).







WARNING:
- Soft top becomes pressureless without a warning signal.
- Secure soft top with a suitable support tool against collapsing.

Left side:







IMPORTANT:
- Risk of damage - make sure front straps are correctly laid. Lay soft top fabric front strap (2) under long roofliner front strap (6).
- Eyelets of front straps must be mounted facing outwards.

Disconnect rivet connections (4) with awl and remove rivet remnants.

Feed soft top fabric tension cable (2) from lug (5).

Adhere to order of front straps without fail:
1. Short roofliner front strap (1) (coming from above)
2. Soft top fabric front strap (2) (coming from below)
3. Rubber strap (3).







Right side:

IMPORTANT: Risk of damage - make sure front straps are correctly laid. On right side lay soft top fabric front strap (1) under wiring harness (2).

Work steps are identical to left side.







Detach rear roof frame seal from soft top bow.

Installation note:
Pay attention to mounting markings on left and right sides.







Pull plastic holding profile (2) on left and right out of rear bow seal (1).







Disconnect left and right plug connections (1).

IMPORTANT: Carefully lever out roof liner clamping profile (2). Replace roofliner if damaged.

Carefully drive roofliner clamping profile (2) with special tool 00 9 317 out of roofliner retaining rail (3).







Installation note:
Pay attention to centre markings on roofliner clamping profile (1) and roofliner retaining rail.

IMPORTANT: Risk of damage to roofliner.

If necessary, remove all retainers from roofliner retaining rail.

Wrap special tool 00 9 319 in foam material.

Pull roofliner taut (1) when fitting.

Using special tool 00 9 319, knock roofliner (1) from middle on left and right into roofliner retaining rail.







Pull soft top fabric (1) out of bow channel (2).

Remove soft top fabric (1) from vehicle.

Installation note:
Pay attention to centre markings of soft top fabric (1) and bow channel (2).

Mount soft top fabric from middle on left and right by hand in bow channel (2).

If necessary, remove all retainers from bow channel (2).
