N54 Engine - Alternator Drive Belt Noise from Engine Compartment

MODEL
E71 (X6 35iX) with N54 engine produced from 12/2007 to March 2010

F01 and F02 (7 Series 740i/740Li) with N54T engine produced from 9/2008 to June 2011

SITUATION

The customer complains that a noise can be heard from the engine compartment with the engine running. When diagnosed, the alternator drive belt tensioner roller is loose and/or the alternator drive belt shows premature wear.

CAUSE

Due to engine operation in high ambient temperatures, the material in the alternator drive belt may shorten, causing increased pressure to be exerted by the drive belt. This increased pressure causes the belt tensioner roller to wear prematurely.

PROCEDURE

Replace the alternator drive belt tensioner, alternator drive belt guide roller and the alternator drive belt as per Repair Instruction REP 11 28 020 Replacing tensioning device for alternator drive belt (N54, N54T).
