Clicking Noise From Sunroof

MODEL
E70 (X5) produced from 11/26/07 until 12/7/07

SITUATION
While opening or closing the sunroof, a clicking noise may be heard when the sunroof is about half way
through its travel.

CAUSE
The drive lugs on the left and right sides of the sunroof cassette may not be properly synchronized.

CORRECTION
Synchronize the sunroof drive lugs.

PROCEDURE

1. Open the sunshade fully. The glass panels should remain fully closed.

2. Remove the gaiter from both the left and right sides of the front sunroof panel, per Repair Instruction RA 54 10 160.

NOTE:
Be careful not to bend the gaiter when removing, or it will not seat fully when it is reinstalled.

3. Inspect the position of the drive lug (1) on both sides of the sunroof cassette. Use the hole (2) in the cassette as a reference point.

4. If both the left and right side lugs are not equidistant from the hole in the cassette, proceed with the following procedure.

5. Lower the FZD per Repair Instruction RA 61 31 043.

6. Remove the sunroof motor per Repair Instruction RA 67 61 005.

7. Both drive lugs need to be aligned to the same position relative to the hole in the cassette.

8. Position a flat head screwdriver (1) in the recess on the drive lug (2) which needs to be moved rearward. Gently tap the handle of the screwdriver to move the drive lug rearward until both are in the same relative position.

9. Reinstall the motor, FZD, and gaiters.

10. Initialize the sunroof if necessary, per Repair Instruction RA 54 0 ...
